Through Act 2 and MGS4 is an action game with a slight stealth component. Disappoint.

You can stealth through the whole game if you want; except for bosses, obviously.

I really enjoyed MGS4 but it's a movie first and a game second, imo. That's not a bad thing, though, if you're a fan of the series. There is loads of fan service and some really fun flashback stuff toward the end.

These moments were especially effective to me because I played some of the previous MGS games right before playing through 4. I was hit with huge waves of nostalgia and feelings of returning to an old place I once knew.

MGS4 is a game I can't recommend to everyone, but I've never experienced a story like it and in this way. I'll never forget it and I'm REALLY looking forward to 5.

There's my issue. It's a choice. The game doesn't force a tactical stealth approach like past iterations.

Yeah, they made Snake capable enough in 4 to actually have a fire fight. The previous games always made that an awkward and frequently fruitless approach, probably on purpose.

Apparently our attention spans aren't up to being "forced" to be stealth, so they either go the action route or just make it either/or. I'll always go stealth if I have to, but the genre is really dwindling away. I'm not sure I have a lot of faith in the new Splinter Cell bringing it back.

I don't know. Both Batman AA and AC have a lot of stealth elements and they were a lot of fun (and sold well). There's also Mark of the Ninja, though that's 2D stealth and easier to pull off for obvious reasons.

I've heard Dishonored is awesome but I haven't played it yet myself (picked it up in the Steam sell).

And Stealth Bastard / Stealth Inc just came out for PSN, and it's a lot of fun, but again...2D stealth. It's been on PC for a while.

Having said all of that...

I don't have a lot of faith in the new Splinter Cell either, but I don't think the genre needs to be brought back to begin with.

Mark of the Ninja does the stealth aspect pretty well.

Also, if you get caught in that game you are dead. I love it.

The amazing thing about it is the level of information conveyed to the player visually. You always know EXACTLY why someone saw, heard, or even smelled you.

I don't know if it could be pulled off, but I'd love to see a 3D stealth game give that much information to the player without the UI becoming a cluttered mess of various colors.

I didn't kill a single person in deus ex so there's that. I thought that was fun.

I think splinter cell is going for the option of aggressive or stealth. I wish assassins creed would become more of a stealth game and not just a counter move game.

Yeah, that boss was terrible. But that sniper battle in a blizzard was pretty awesome.

That game is chock full of moments that left me impressed with it's genius one minute, and shaking my head in confusion the next.
