I've boiled crawfish several times but I want to try and either steam or boil some blue crabs for the first time this weekend.

a few questions:

Should I store and clean live blue crabs the same way I would live crawfish?

Anyone have recommendations for places to buy live crabs in the Northern VA/DC/Maryland area? Also, what should I look for when buying them?

Any tips on how to prepare, cook, or season them?

TIA

Either steam with Old Bay or boil like a coonass.

Keep in an ice chest, perhaps with a little ice under the crabs. But they need to be right side up, and the drain plug pulled. No ice water...

My SIL lives up there in West Virginia, they have no problems getting crabs at decent prices. 75% come from Louisiana. Make sure the are alive...

Storage first, placing them in a fridge/ice not water filled ice chest will induce a comatose state in a crab, they will seem as if dead. Boiling not steaming will effectively get flavors into the crabs to be consumed, steamed require an after cooking seasoning of some sort(see drawn butter for lobster) for an example.

To boil, season the water with onion, lemon, garlic, and crab boil per the instructions on the package. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 10 minutes or so. Taste and adjust seasonings to your taste.

Bring to a boil, add crabs that you've had on ice. Simmer for 12 to 15 minutes and cut the fire. Soak for 10 to 15 minutes and taste a claw. Soak more if needed, and serve when you like them. I like to put a few sticks of butter and a few quarts of vinegar in the water.

I have found that crabs can be very hard to season, full crabs will hardly take any seasoning and poor crabs can get very spicy very quick...

Right now the females are chock a block with eggs. Not a good time to steam the IMHO. I would boil them.

When I use to live up there, my go to place was Maine Avenue fish market.

You can't keep crabs that have eggs exposed in the sponge.

We are talking about the bright orange deliciousness inside the female crabs.

Best part of the crab...I love to eat crabs with those who don't eat this stuff.
