Mark Ingram says he's not concerned about making his third season the first one in which he lives up to his Heisman Trophy hype, but he does intend to be a much greater factor in the New Orleans Saints' offense, whether that shows up in the statistics or not

"Everyone has expectations all the time," Ingram said. "It's not about living up to what other people expect you to do. It's about being a great teammate, improving every day and being the best football player you can be to help your team win games and ultimately win a championship." As the only Heisman winner in Alabama's illustrious history and one of two first-round picks by the Saints in 2011, Ingram has spent the past two years in a state full of LSU fans who were eager to enjoy the days when the former Crimson Tide star's success no longer came at their expense. Based on fan comments on radio talk shows or in Internet chat rooms, many of those fans feel like they're still waiting for Ingram to validate the Saints' decision to trade a 2012 first-round pick to acquire him. Ingram has averaged 3.9 yards per carry over the past two seasons. He played 10 games as a rookie and rushed for 474 yards and five touchdowns. Last season, he ran for 602 yards and five touchdowns. "Of course, I have high expectations for myself as far as individual things," Ingram said. "But my No. 1 thing is just coming out here and showing that I can do anything that is asked of me every single time I set foot on that field and be an explosive player for this offense." Teammate Pierre Thomas told NOLA.com that Ingram needs to regain the mindset he had with the Crimson Tide. "Play like you did at Alabama, while acknowledging this is not Alabama," Thomas told the website. "He can't listen to all that nonsense. He's got to block that out."

Hampered by injuries during much of his first two years in the NFL, the 5-foot-9 Ingram said he now is as trim and healthy as he has been since turning pro. He said that his weight is around 215 pounds and his goal is to remain below 220 this season.

"I have finally had a healthy offseason," Ingram said. "My rookie year I missed some games. Last year and [the 2012] offseason, I was just recovering from some offseason surgeries, but I played all 16 games and I finished strong. I'm not frustrated. I can definitely improve in different aspects and things like that, but I am trying to get better."

Saints coach Sean Payton said there were reasons to be patient with Ingram the past two seasons, including his injuries and the fact that the Saints not only pass a lot but also had been splitting carries among four running backs, including Chris Ivory, who was traded to the New York Jets during the 2013 draft.

"Year 3 is important" for Ingram, Payton said. "To his specific case, he's healthier than he's been, and his weight's down. We expect him to play well and have a good season. ... Some guys, it happens right away. The challenge at running back here is sometimes those snaps are being split and it's a little different from" other positions.

I hope he does well but PT is still the better back, and I think always will be. People forget PT broke Red Grange's rushing record at Illinois. That's Red Freakin' Grange. PT will never get the credit he deserves outside of Saints fans but I've never seen a runner do a better job of picking his way through holes, using blocks and slipping tackles.

The hate this guy receives is unreal. He started to come on pretty strong toward the middle of last season.

I'm optimistic

That's not saying much.

Pierre Thomas is freaking incredible.

Yeah and it strangely coincided with the emergence of Chris Ivory. Something tells me SP is gonna try and light that same fire under Ingram's arse.

It's really all out on the table for Ingram to take this year IMO. We shipped off Ivory in a move that IMO tells Ingram, this is your chance. Take it or leave it. If he misses games/underachieves again this year, he's gone. But I tend to lean towards the side of he'll put it together and become the feature back of the future.

That said, I think the carries get distributed somewhat like this:
Ingram 45%
Thomas 35%
Sproles 20%

This is a prime year for Ingram. He's healthy, and CSP had a year to observe what a lack of a running attack will do to your QB. He will get used quite frequently.

I really hope that he has a break out season. Him and PT and Sproles is a great combo weapon.

If Pierre Thomas wasn't rotting on the sidelines, a freaking advanced stats RB god, than no one would care if he got carries or not on this team. As it is though, it's painfully obvious to even the casual fan that the cruiser is a much better back.

This is all true but PT is the definition of an overachiever and Ingram has all the potential in the world. Coaches try to say that they will take the guy that doesn't have all the physical tools but produces over a better athlete that never lives up to his potential but we see otherwise in every sport. I also think PT is the better back at the moment FWIW.

PT gets nothing but love on here but the fact that he doesn't have the build to be the "feature guy" is why his stats and recognition across the country is limited. I love the guy and think he runs as hard as a rb can but he does have his limits. If ingram can be the powerful presence that this offense needs then look out

You must have watched different games last year than I. Towards the last half of the year, I found that PT was surprisingly unsuccessful carrying the ball. In the beginning of the year he was fine.

Once again, it's irrational to blame Ingram for this.

I don't hate him... I just want pt to have all of his carries.

But is it appropriate for PT to be a feature back?

Would he produce as he does now with way more carries?

PT was never a feature back. Not even in college. But that is part of why he's as good as he is and will contribute for a while. He is great for his role in this offense.

Wasn't there a stat that last year, the Saints ran the ball like 85% of the time when Ingram was in the game? I think he's underachieved thus far, but when you've got an 85% chance to stack the line against Ingram and be right, its hard to fault him for not finding running room.

Guy #1: "Oh look. Ingram is in the game. You think they are gonna try a trick this time and pass it instead of running it up the middle?"
Guy #2: "Nope. Up the middle."

*Handoff to Ingram up the middle for a 2 yard gain.*

Guy #2: "See. It's always up the middle."
Guy #1: "Yeah. I just keep hoping the OC will call something different. Oh well..... when is SP back again?"
Guy #2: "Not soon enough."

The fact is that many on here see him as 'run two yards then fall down' so any other factors do not really matter sadly.
I don't give a damn if Jedidiah f@cking Collins gets 90% of the carries as long as we are a top ten running team 'cause that is a playoff lock stat for us.
