re: Soriano scratched from Cubs lineup

Castro just simply isn't good enough to put up with his poor defense & demeanor. I can't stand the guy personally.

His defense hasn't gotten better in 3 years. He has zero focus. He's known to loaf on the base paths.

Where is the defensive coaching? His problems are correctable but he may have gotten worse. He can't make routine plays. The cubs will never win anything with him there playing like that.

As for trading him, it's not like they'd be getting nothing. Put Barney at SS and at least you could put up with his zero offensive easier.

He was a college SS and drafted as such. He has a solid arm

And I'm just talking a short term stop gap

He played some short before Castro got called up IIRC. I wouldn't count on Barney at short, though. I'm not giving up on Castro, but I'm not overly encouraged by his progress. There's a lot of talent there and his mistakes are correctable, but we've been saying that for a few years now. He's only 23.

Svuem is actually known for his defensive coaching. Soriano has said he was never coached on defense until last year.

I agree on Castro. His OBP has decreased every year since he's been called up. His batting avg gone from .307 to .283 to .249. He has 18 walks in 100 games.

The scouting report is out on him, and he's not adjusting.

It's hard for me to say he's not gettin coached..b/c guys like Rizzo and Valbuena are showing improvement

Why would you...dropped 20 points in batting average last year from the year before while putting up 4 more home runs 12 more RBI and stealing 2 more bases.

Cubs asked him to try to hit for more power this year and he's developed a hitch in his swing preventing him from catching up to fastballs...pretty sure that's fixable, or the option always exist to try to get him back to hitting the ball like he used to.

If you're upsed with the defense, yea that's a problem but not something you dump the kid for

He's only 23.

he is insanley young, his contract is quite favorable, we'll have him in his prime years and he got called up to early, cut him some slack.

Dump castro...we've got some of the dumbest fans in baseball.

What do you like about Castro so much?

The bad far outweighs the good at this point. He's not a guy to build around. Be proactive & get some pieces. He's not a Theo type player to begin with

re: Soriano scratched from Cubs lineup

No it doesn't.

He's been asked to try to change his approach in a lost season...why the hell not. Or is someone really going to try to tell me this is based solely on his 2012 production and not the sample you have from this year?

He's not a Theo type player to begin with

Why'd they sign him to that contract then?

quote:

"The way it was looking, Starlin would be a free agent far too early," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said on Tuesday. "He's a big part of our future and we had four years of control of him after this year. By doing this deal we now have eight.

quote:

"... He's one of the players we're building around and we're excited to have him as a Cub for a long time and he's a big part of our future. We're building a young core and Starlin's right in the middle of that. We're really excited about it. This is about him. It's certainly not about me. But this is a very good day for the Cubs."

Dont' get me wrong, i'm quite frustrated with him right now, but i'm not trying to dump the guy becuase he's not playing great on a shitty team.

re: Soriano scratched from Cubs lineup

What are they supposed to say about him? Honestly.

As far as his approach, I don't see much difference. Free swinger who's pitch selection & recognition has regressed big time

Well they said that when they signed him to the contract. The base of my question was if he wasn't a Thoyer type player why'd they sign him at all?

Good read for the dump castro crowd
Castro

Decent summary on trade value and what baez offers as a replacement (albeit a couple years away)

You mean this year? Well he's not hitting the ball this year, so that' different, and it coudl very well be becase he's been asked to try to hit for more power, his swing this year is noticably different than when he came up and he has changed his approach in that he's supposed to be (often tiems to his frustration) waiting on fastballs he can drive.

hell his batting average is already up 21 points since his day off. Just maybe this guy should be given a bit of time to right the ship?

When it boils down to it, you think other teams actually want him for the cost the Cubs will ask for? And he's the best SS option in the organization right now. He's very young, he's got a favorable contract and he's got all the talent in the world.

And really this isn't even true at this point in the season. Before the All Star break he looked real bad at the plate. For the last month or so he is hitting around .300 again. Since the break you can clearly see he has opened up to hitting the ball to right field and he has been doing so with authority. Defensive lapses are going to happen. He is 23. He wasn't ready at the start of the season, but has been doing MUCH better both offensively and defensively.

Regardless Castro ain't going anywhere.

If you're a Cubs fan, patience has got to be the mantra right now. Let things play out. Giving up on Castro at this point is so short sighted. We are building for 2015 ya'll.

As the great poet Axl Rose once said, "You know where you are? You're in the jungle baby, you're gonna die..."

Wait...that's not right.

As the great poet Axl Rose once said, "All we need is just a little patience."

A little more on Corey Black [Bleacher Nation]:
quote:

Born on August 4, 1991, Black isn’t a big guy, standing 5-11, listed at 175. As you would expect from a former shortstop, he is a very good athlete and has plenty of arm strength: he’s been clocked as high as 100 MPH in short stints and works in the mid-90s as a starter. He has a curveball, slider, and changeup. Although none of his secondary pitches are considered outstanding, they off-set the fastball well when his command is on. His mechanics aren’t the smoothest and his command is inconsistent, but he picks up strikeouts at a good clip.

If he throws strikes and makes further progress with his secondaries, Black can start at higher levels. If that doesn’t work out, his arm would still look good in the bullpen.

That "article" (read: blog) sounded like one of my high school English papers.

Sure enough
