Why you would you dump two veterans playing well on a cheap contract? They will not get anything out of those prospects in return.

You need to hold a few guys to help the young ones learn the ropes. Plus, they are fine in a platoon or as a fourth OF on a quality team. Why trade for the sake of trading?

One of these tards actually said we should trade Castro. That should tell you about what you are dealing with here.

I just said why.

You trade in hopes of landing a young prospect who turns out. Whether it be a middle reliever, 5th starter, utility infielder, or diamond in the rough stud.

I like Schierholtz and DeJesus as players but they do nothing for the future.

Why not hold Scott Feldman?

Castro will never been any better than a guy like Alexi Ramirez. Trade him now while his value is high.

he's a loaf and plays horrible defense. Impatient at the plate

Probably because he was pitching as well as he ever has in his career and his trade value produced a decent return. strop hasn't given up a run in a Cubs uniform.

DeJesus doesn't have much trade value and is a leader for all the younger guys on the team. Front office knows they aren't going to get anything that would outweigh keeping him around to be a mentor for the younger guys.

Uh, Nate Schierholtz is playing his best ball of his career.

MLB just showed all the scouts at the game and said Theo and Jed said no one is untouchable. First name they mention: DeJesus.

Lefty veteran bats always have value. DeJesus would be a nice piece for a contender. He doesn't need to be playing well to have value; he's proven.

I agree but I haven't said one single word about Nate in this entire thread. I wouldn't be opposed to trading him for something of value. The Pirates are supposedly interested. I have no clue what they would be able/willing to offer.

I realize what they have said about deJesus. They also said they would like to keep DeJesus in the same breath because of his ability to bring up younger players. I'm not saying they WON'T trade him. I said I don't think they will do it. I just don't see them getting enough for him to make it worth their while and I certainly don't think they are going to trade him just to make a move. We'll see what happens.

you quoted a guy saying it was dumb to trade him by replying "yeah broskie, these tards wanted to trade Castro too"

Well said. Hell Nate is still in an arbitration year next year and there is no one really waiting to fill his role. A team would really need to overpay to make that trade justifiable.

I'm not sure if its overvaluing on trade returns or the grass is always greener and a trade return will be better than the guy you have type mentality (which it both their cases it likely won't work out that way) or if folks forget we still need to run 9 players out there tomorrow and I'd prefer if they weren't all gellespies and sapelts.

Soriano caught a red eye flight to New York last night. No deal is official yet, but he's said his goodbyes already and is presumably with the Yankees.

Bleacher Nation has some information that the Cubs save $7M-$12M of the $25M still owed to Soriano and get to choose from either Corey Black (21 years old, A) or Tommy Kahnle (23 years old, AA).

John Sickels ranked Black 12th in the Yankees system, while Kahnle was ranked just outside the top 20.

The fact that the Cubs get any savings AND a player they could possibly use out of this deal is a miracle. They didn't need to trade Soriano, but I think they wanted to for his sake.

I expected the Yankees to make Cubs eat more of that contract.... I expect Yankees to let Granderson walk this offseason and run out Gardner in CF, Soriano LF, and Ichiro in RF with Wells rotating in as well and he/Soriano splitting DH next season.

sounds like yanks are only paing about 7 million of his remaining contract. Right about where it was expected to be, perhaps a little low.

Agreed. I'd been happy keeping the elder statesman around through next year, but it opens a spot to see if lake can stick and gives him a shot for another playoff run.

sounds like his goodbye was emotional to say the least.

I see no reason for them to trade cheap, useful commodities like Thunder Nate or The DeJesus. They are solid, dependable and cheap players. Someone will have to overwhelm the Cubs to make them trade those guys. There's no point in trading to trade.

Look at it this way. The Cubs were shopping Garza because they knew they could get value for him. The value of the return was worth more to the Cubs than Garza himself. In this situation, with DeJesus and Schierholtz, they won't "shop" them or put them on the block, but they will most certainly listen to offers.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Cubs will pay roughly $17.7 million of the approximately $24.5 million left on Alfonso Soriano's contract.

The Yankees will be on the hook for about $1.8 million this year and $5 million next year. The trade sending the veteran outfielder back to the Bronx only needs commissioner Bud Selig's approval at this point. The Cubs are expected to receive pitching prospect Corey Black in the deal.
quote:

UPDATE 2 (8:05am CT): Jim Bowden is reporting that the Commissioner’s Office has approved the trade and it is now official. We’ll still wait for word from the teams. We also still need official word on what the Cubs are getting.

Not bad for him, he will be better than what Yankees have been putting out in RF but he isn't a difference maker either

I think for all parties invovled this is a good deal. Would i have liked more, sure, but i also wonder how short sori's list of teams hed go to was, so we might have had our hands tied a bit.
