Sim City 3000 was one of my favorite games as a child. It was the last Sim City I played. I was excited about the release of the new Sim City until all the debacle with server trouble and crashing comps. Because of all this negative press I decided to wait until the bugs were fixed to buy it.

Is the game worth getting and are the problems corrected now?

I wonder if any one here who bought it (and still admits it) actually still plays it.

From the reports, it was so bad I can't see why someone would have stuck around for it to be "fixed."

Also, I don't think it can be "fixed," there doesn't seem to be any foundation solid enough to work from. They'd have to scrap it and start over.

There still seems to be debate about this. From what I've read, the game wants you to have a city that specializes toward a certain objective, encouraging you to team up with friends whose own cities have complementary specializations. So, to get the most out of the game, you need to have friends playing it too. Or, at least that's the criticism I've heard levied against it from a gameplay perspective, ignoring the technical problems the game had (has?).

If someone here doesn't chime in, I would do a little more research. If you are still undecided, look at the games in this link if you want to try scratching your city-building itch but aren't confident in SimCity 5.

5 SimCity Alternatives

I've never played it, but I keep hearing Cities XL brought up in conversation as a good competitor to Maxis's offering.

I haven't touched it in over 2 months. City sizes are way too small, and the city specialties/connections didn't work like they were supposed too. I think they've fixed some of the bugs but I still won't pick it back up until they give us bigger cities. Stay away in my opinion.
