Carolina Rigging...

Just went to Toledo Bend last week with my Uncle who has been on the that lake for 20 years. This was my first time Carolina rigging and we did well with largemouth and Kentucky bass. He always catches consistent 2lbs or above using this setup. Of course he never uses a hard baits anymore, only "finesse" fishes with senkos, brush hogs, wacky worm style, etc. I've always Texas rigged my plastics but that reservoir is a different monster and now I see why people are fishing in the middle of the lake 
I know the spring/spawn is a different animal there...hell you can catch fish with a piece of bread but My question is: Does this setup work in our south Louisiana river system or is this just a lake type of fishing? Any of you guys had success here fishing Carolina in say the Spillway, Belle River, Verret?

I never tried it there except it works saltwater w reds w crabs?
Actually these fish are getting wise to it over here. It's is almost not used like it was. In the nineties it was money on almost every lake in Texas and guides at Fork made their living rigging the deep timber there for years.
It is a technique that will work in 2 foot to 30 , just vary the weight and the length of the leader. I have tried to get them on it again, going back to mono leader say 12 lb instead of fluorocarbon. Sometimes it works but not often. Good luck

Oh it works well as long as you are fishing the right spots creek channels, drop offs and reeling up the drop off. My Uncle has it down to a science at Toledo. We caught 40 bass in three days over 2lbs and a few over 4lbs. Baby Brush Hogs watermelon in color...just dragging in through the hydrilla. I'm just curious if our locals down here use it in river system with any success? I've used it in my pond bc the bass have gone deeper and have caught several I never would have.

Have used it with lots of success at Henderson on what those people call points. Basically, the entensions of the islands. Can't wait to do it again.

AlxTgr - using the same soft plastics? Brush hogs, senkos, etc? I go to Toledo about 4 times a year and I noticed the weekend warriors mostly never fish this way. My Uncle has caught over 25 bass 5lbs or more using carolina already this year and it wasn't all during the spawn . Majority of my fishing done here is Belle River and the Spillway. I'm just going to try it in and around this area and keep a rod setup. I really enjoy the style bc you can feel everything on the bottom. Hooking the fish is different but man it's fun to fight them from the deep.

I never use hogs, but recognize many people do. All depends on conditions. In a natural body of water, I'll steer away from my usual finesse stuff and go back to a lizard, even in summer. Fish don't bite lizard only in the spring.
BTW, I don't think I've bass fished at Toledo anywhere closer than 200 yards from dry land since the 80's.

how big of a weight do yall use for carolina rigging in, say, 8' of water? and how long of a leader?

My favorite at this point is a big floating lizard.
Color depends on location, but pumpkin seed

Felt the same way about chatter baits for years.I was ready to throw them all in a dumpster.
That all changed in a period of 1 hour on the red river last year
