J. Landry & O. Beckham - 2014 draft status
Posted on 7/13/13 at 6:14 pm

I've read where multiple posters believe there is a good/decent chance that both #3 & #80 bolt after their junior campaign. My questions are as follows:
1) what have they shown on their first two years to warrant belief they could crack the top 3 rounds?
2) Is J. Landry/family in a dire financial situation that he needs 5-6 money now, rather than wait a year & make much more?
3) Is 2014 expected to be a weak draft class for WR?
Both guys are solid college WR's who possess neither top end speed, elusiveness (Odell a little better than avg. here), great hands (#80's catch vs. Arky & practice legend notwithstanding), & are shorter & lighter than 1/2 the NFL corners out there these days.
As the great Bill O'Reilly says "where am I wrong?"
TIA
ETA: since OBJ went to Newman, I assumed his family is doing well financially - that's why I only referenced Landry

1) With the rookie cap in place the money difference from 2-7 isn't that big anymore. Expect to see more Juniors leaving in college as you already saw with LSU losing what, 11 Juniors?
2) See above
3) We have a ridiculous recruiting class of WRs coming in if we land who we're projected to land. It's probably best for those guys to leave after this season anyway. Might get buried with guys like Williams coming in who will immediately play at LSU.

it all depends. personally i dont think they would ever be taken in the first 2 rounds. really not big or fast enough. regardless of what their stats might be.
Landry might have a better shot at getting drafted higher cus his more physical nature.

Neither show NFL talent to me yet. A more consistent QB and passing game could change that but so far they have both been good college guys only.

I have no doubt Landry will be in the NFL and be a very good receiver at the next level, our offensive system makes it almost impossible to display his abilities. He showed flashes of greatness last year, made spectacular grabs you rarely see in college, hands are like glue. He ran better routes this year, but with cam running the show, the new offensive system could change things in a heart beat, not drafted to 2nd rounder.

both look like late round or UDFA prospects. Both are small. Landry is slow by NFL standards but has good hands and is physical and a very good college receiver who should be even better this year. OBJ has average NFL speed, is somewhat elusive, doesn't run great routes and has below average hands. While its not true that Miles doesn't play freshman or underclassman over upper classmen who have been starters, he is somewhat loyal to upper classmen who have started. I would like to see what Durel and Leslie could do as starters. Also Diarse should be good. Wright and Boone look like more solid recievers than OBJ IMO, but don't have the elusiveness. I hope that it just isn't set in stone that OBJ and Landry are going to be the primary recievers this season and it is an open competition in fall camp and in the early season games.

More than just a few posters, mainly on the recruiting board when discussing our potential incoming WR's and how much they'll see the field after OBJ and J. Landry leave early.
To me, it makes about as much sense as Chris Faulk leaving early after the knee injury. Unless their #'s improve dramatically, I don't see them going before Rd. 5. Personally, I think Q. Leslie would be drafted higher after this year based on measurables alone.

Agree with you on some things but OBJ has great speed.
Oh yeah and Jarvis Landry is the G.O.A.T
Jarvis right now he is our best WR and he will hopefully have a big year. If he bolts no big deal, I'll just have to find another favorite player of all time.

Landry is a better pro prospect than Beckham IMO
Though I haven't heard much about them leaving. I think Beckham loves Bogies too much to leave.
I have heard that Lael is gone next year though

They will both be drafted, but when depends on this year. They are not prototype NFL size but both could leave after this year.
This is why we are taking 4-5 WRs in this class.

I think someone in ESPN has ODB as a top 5 WR in the SEC.

It's a little early to judge them as 6th round to UDFA status considering what they have had to deal with offensively(coordinator, playcalls, and QB play). Beckham has great speed and elusiveness, great punt returner, but just needed to concentrate on a few catches he should have had. Landry catches everything and has about average speed. I think both will have a great opportunity to show their talent in full(instead of glimpses) with a real OC/QB coach, and a quarterback with a tough last season under his belt. Think their stock will greatly improve.

Landry really reminds me of Hines Ward. Btw, I believe both will leave for the NFL. I would rather make 300k in the NFL versus sitting in a boring classroom, while risking an ACL tear.

people on here have been talking about these guys leaving after next season for a year now. i thought i was the only one who thought this was ridiculous. sure they might, but neither of them has consistently shown anything or possess the raw physical potential of an early entrant. love them both, just haven't seen it.

After this year with a 5th-year Senior QB and Cam as OC, we'll know who they are. They won't be getting any faster or taller going into '14. They may stay for their SR seasons, but with (likely) a true SO quarterback and a ton of new WR talent coming in, they're not likely to increase their production. Again, they are who they are and they will be who they will be. Regardless of when they come out.
