LAS VEGAS -- Minutes after playing in his first organized basketball game in more than four months, New Orleans Pelicans guard Austin Rivers found his coach, Monty Williams, along the far wall of Cox Pavillion, and the two hugged.Williams is a meticulous tactician, and before he even let go of Rivers, the coach brandished a list of play sequences from the Pelicans' 77-72 win over the New York Knicks that he'd scrawled on the back of a summer league media packet. With his signature combo of encouragement and intensity, Williams offered a critique of Rivers' pick-and-roll defense before enumerating some of the key possessions on which Rivers delivered. On Friday, Rivers' highlights outshined his shortcomings, as he poured in 24 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, collected seven rebounds and dished out six assists. Though he was humble after the game, Rivers was also clearly proud of his effort, especially after the long layoff caused by a broken bone in his right hand in March."I haven't played in so long since I got hurt," Rivers said. "I got to watch a lot of film and see my weaknesses and how I need to change speeds instead of going a hundred miles per hour. And it kind of showed today -- just kind of like getting to the lane, changing speeds and getting it high off the glass and pulling up for shots and getting people open."

Great first game by Rivers. Would make the team even more deadly if we could have yet another solid player coming off of the bench.

REALLY looking forward to seeing him play again. We all saw his progression and it was tough to see his injury in the middle of that progress.

kid is too talented with too good of a work ethic to wind up a bust. Looking forward to seeing him shine this year.

Well let's be honest...he did suck

His potential was definitely there but watching him was difficult. You could easily tell he was a rookie on the floor. With some experience under his belt and a better understanding of what he needs to do I think he will finally look comfortable on the floor.

I want Rivers to be good because I'm the lone Rivers apologist at work. Everyone else says he's a "bust".

All of the "casual" fans have written him off as a bust. Which is pretty stupid when you look at how bad some stars did as rookies.

I love to use the Kobe Bryant example. Obviously I don't expect Rivers to be one of the best SGs to ever play basketball but I bet no one foresaw Kobe's elite career after he put up 7 points a game and couldn't stop turning the ball over.

And you shouldn't. If you did then your opinions would be way too easily swayed. We have to remember that it is just one summer league game. However, it is encouraging that he's doing this well when this time last year he looked god awful.
