All of the "casual" fans have written him off as a bust. Which is pretty stupid when you look at how bad some stars did as rookies.

Ding!

The dude was playing at a severe disadvantage from day 1: young, inexperienced, small, light, target on his forehead, and more.

Plus, he was asked to play 30 minutes or whatever when he should have been playing 3. Somehow, accepting the challenge and duty was viewed as a negative. He was like tank man if the tank had run him over. (Not that tank, a real tank).

None of that means he'll be a good player, but taking last seasons as the main predictor of future performance when there are so many other things to consider is misguided.

kid is too talented with too good of a work ethic to wind up a bust. Looking forward to seeing him shine this year.

My thoughts exactly.

He mentioned it. About changing speeds. His whole general pace was different. My favorite play was when he was bringing the ball up, then accelerated and went right to the basket. He lulled them to sleep by going medium, then took it up two gears.

He was in total control of the game's tempo. Which will really become crucial.

Far as I'm concerned it's alright to get excited. He even was able to score on Iman Shumpert. That isn't some scrub that won't even be in Europe come this season.

Still. Can't wait to see if he can sustain and be consistent.

I hope someone bookmarked all the Rivers sucks threads so those who were so down on him can eat crow.

Just because he improved doesn't erase the fact that he was awful.

I think he meant all of the 'Rivers is a bust' threads.

I'd pretty much written him off (probably prematurely). I'd love to be wrong.

I wasn't one of the overtly vocal detractors, but I never expected much from him.

I love to use the Kobe Bryant example

Thats great, but it's still not a good example. The majority who had terrible rookie seasons don't end up like Kobe. There definitely a higher % of players who have had terrible rookie seasons and don't develop and have poor careers, opposed to turning it around and becoming really good NBA players. I know you understand Kobe's the exception not the rule, but i just want to reiterate that there are WAY more failures than successes.

Rivers just needs to develop into a good bench player w/ this team and that is definitely feasible.

If I had to compare him to what his career or Nba production will be, unfortunately I see him as a Jerryd Bayless type.

I forgot who mentioned it in the game thread from the other day, but they said it perfect. If he plays like this for most of the Summer League, the whole "he's playing against scrubs" argument doesn't work considering he'll be playing comparable competition as a 7th/8th man.

That's what I've been saying. Summer League isn't NBA, but it isn't something to shrug off as meaning nothing. Especially when Austin did horrible in it last year. If Austin came out and dropped 50 and someone said "He'll win MVP" then I would say they are overreacting. But Austin had significant improvement yesterday. And he won't face talent much better than that against most second units in the NBA

Also keep in mind he's not a 'bust' if he doesn't turn into an all-star. Would be pretty good value to get a solid bench player at #10. Just go back and look at the history of the players picked there -- not particularly a gold mine of talent.

These facts pale in comparison to a year+ of foot-stomping and premature declarations based on self-assessed basketball clairvoyance.

That's a pretty big point that some people miss. If he can be just a serviceable bench guard then that's a good deal at 10.

Holy frick! I hadn't thought of that.

Actually, assuming we can define our terms, this would be an interesting subject to research.

there are WAY more failures than successes.

Again, it's important to define what you mean by "success" and "failure".

The good thing is with our roster this year, he should be able to be allowed to take "baby steps." It sounds like he had a lot of basic mechanical problems that the coaches are dealing with, specifically many with his shot.
