2005 - great year, disappointing end, but an AMAZING season, beating Georgia would have been the cherry, but the dismantling of Miami was great, too. NC wasn't an option this year as USC and Texas went undefeated to play in perhaps the greatest BCS-era championship

2006 - probably Miles, most talented team outside of 2011, play-calling against Auburn was atrocious, but typical of what we've come to see from Miles, we had the chance to win at the end of the game if not for Refgate... Throw in the JM meltdown at Florida, and we could have started the SEC streak

2007 - WON IT ALL

2008 - losses in defensive starters and Pelini, as well as the recruiting effects from the 2005 Miles/Saban transition caught up to the team. Nobody should have expected us to repeat this year, however

2009 - this was a what-if year, IMO. A year removed from dismissing an All-SEC QB from the roster, the team went 9-3, losing by a combined 21 pts. I have to believe that having Perrilloux on the roster would be worth 2 pts against OM and 10 against FLA and Bama.... Now obviously there were other variables during the season, but this was a year we left on the table. Whether Miles is at fault for discipline or Perriloux for putting himself above the team, this could have been a special year

2010 - tough games against Auburn and Arky doomed us this year. I tend to believe we finished where we should have this year, going 10-2

2011 - Special season got screwed by playoff proponents... Obviously left is one hanging out there

2012 - We let Florida get away with one this year and played a hell of a game against Bama that really could have gone either way. Had Beckham not fumbled the long pass in the 4th or had the defense stood up at the end of Bama, we probably destroy ND.

So... While debatable, I think even Rantards are accurate when they say Miles left 4 NCs on the table, but don't understand why this has to be an indictment against the man.

To win a NC, one must have talent, coaching and a great deal of luck. Personally, I'm relieved that Miles potentially sacrificed a shot in '09... Don't want to turn into Meyer's Gators... But otherwise, there have been years where the ball didn't bounce our way, and others where politics got in the way (2011), but all in all, what program besides Bama has been so fortunate during Miles' tenure?

So should have 5 in 8 years? Reasonable.

Just 4? What kind of LSU fan are you anyway?
Only 4? I guess you are just happy with being mediocre.
Merely 4? How can you stand being such a wuss?
A paltry 4? Turn in our rantidiot card.

Not saying we should have, but that we had the potential to do so. The football landscape is much more balanced than in the Bowden-Osbourne days...

I'm wondering why being in the POSITION to do that is a negaive

Geez, why such harsh criticism of the OP? He's just stating his opinion. I think he left 3 on the table, not 4.

Because there's a significance difference from phrasing it, "How many times during the Miles' era has LSU been in a position to play for a national title?" and "How many titles has Miles left on the table?"

The former sounds positive, and promotes the fact that LSU has, year in and year out, been one of only a very small handful of teams with legit shot at playing for all the marbles down th stretch. The later makes you sound like a fricking moron.

He left 3 on the table for sure. 2011 was a joke. I blame Les Miles for that debacle.

Well, on that note, I think it's directly related to Saban's success.
2005 The stress Katrina brought on the team can't be underestimated. Lot of guys were housing/helping people for the whole season and ATL crystallized this. By the 3rd quarter they were flat worn out.
2006 - Jamarcus was a fine CFB QB but I thought the Raiders pick absurd. He did great against teams we outran but against those we didn't (AU and UF - 13 points total) he is what he is. You're not outrunning anyone in the NFL hence his 'career'. (Same could be said of Spurrier also).
2008/2009 - Losing RP hurt as much as anything.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a Les Homer with eyes wide open. The HC's main job is recruiting, staff hires and keeping everyone on the same page. Poor QB recruiting and QB development has hurt. Hopefully Cameron will rectify this. Recruiting is fine. I think he needs to work a bit on team focus and if this means benching someone taking breaks, so be it. The only time I've ever been truly 'dissappointed' in Miles is when he threw JJ under the bus after the 09 OM game. This was a moral lapse to me, but if that was the worst thing he ever does here, Gawd bless him.

But the negativity. Miles isn't Saban. Doing more than the other 99% doesn't seem to matter. It's more a commentary on some of the fans rather than Miles to me though.
