LSU adopts new free speech laws after lawsuit

For anyone who attended LSU I'm sure you remember free speech alley. That small area that you could practice your first amendment rights. Well that is now kinda a thing of the past. The ADF filed a law suit against Lsu after the pro life group was denied the ability to hand out fliers about the pro life solidarity day outside of free speech alley. They contacted ADF and told them about the situation they filled a law suite and won.

Now students can pretty much distribute anywhere on campus as long as it doesn't disrupt standard functions of the university

I love how you are celebrating like this is a great thing.

At least before when I wasn't in the mood to be accosted I can just avoid that spot.

Now they can wait in ambush outside of any building waiting for classes to end.

Why?

It means they can attack students verbally all over campus.

Too bad it wasn't a pro-choice student who filed the lawsuit otherwise I'm sure you would have a problem with it

Pretty much.....

And I love how they include all of the cattle pastures and agricultural fields to make the size difference all the bigger.

And how they made it seem like free speech was banned but in that one spot.

No, it wasn't banned, you just were stopped from confronting students wherever the frick you pleased. And for all of their bitching of "limited space" it's very rare I have seen FSA full.

Sorry, but I liked not being verbally assaulted in the Quad.

FSA is just a empty husk of what it once was many years ago. The likes of Jed and Cindy weren't appreciated by almost all in thier day. They spewed hatred when you boil it down, it was not the Gospel.

No, did I just get lucky?

In my years at LSU I only ever received one PETA pamphlet in the quad.

I got a couple of Revielle reporter requests, but I didn't mind those.

And in doing so, made FSA one of the most informative, educational and strength/character building places on the Campus. Thanks to Jed and Cindy.

being able to fully practice my first amendment rights on LSU's campus after it was limited before. Why would I not celebrate this.

the new rules only has to do with flyer handouts it said nothing about public demonstrations, or yelling like people did in free speech alley. LSU can still stop people from preaching in the quad, because it is in a close enough distance of classrooms to possibly create a disturbance.

plus it mentions that the area immediately around middleton library is still of limits. (I guess they would consider this an area of study which would mean protests or flyer distribution would disrupt study.)

you are overreacting to this and creating extremes, I doubt this will happen, plus you could voice your concern if people are preventing you from getting to your class in time because they are trying to hand you flyers.

all this sounds like from you is that you don't want to be inconvenienced by free speech on a public university. So you will limit someone's first amendment rights just to make your life easier.

Um....how am I overreacting and creating extremes?

Why was it a problem for the group if that wasn't EXACTLY what they planned to do? They wanted to have people at strategic points all through campus.

And it isn't about them preventing me from getting to class.

It's about them walking up to me unsolicited and being pushy.

A university is too much a target for special interests for it not to be annoying if they weren't regulated.

I could care less if this was a pro life student group who brought this change, on the policy side and political side of this issue. (personally I find it awesome because I was a part of the students for life group so I can maybe feel slightly responsible for the change, but not much at all )

but all that matters is that people get to practice their free speech more on LSU's campus. Free Speech zones are unconstitutional and this is what LSU has had.
