How Rachel Jeantel went from star witness to 'train wreck'

quote:

Reaction to Rachel Jeantel on the stand “has been in terms of aesthetics, of disregarding a witness on the basis of how she talks, how good she is at reading and writing,” says George Ciccariello-Maher, a history and politics professor at Drexel University, in Philadelphia. “These are subtle things that echo literacy testing at the polls, echo the question of whether black Americans can testify against white people, of being always suspect in their testimony. It’s the same old dynamics emerging in a very different guise.”

Seriously,

quote:

Yet the potential for Jeantel’s testimony to illuminate that central question appeared to sink beneath a wave of commentary about aesthetics, as Christina Coleman summarizes in a Global Grind article called “Why Black People Understand Rachel Jeantel.”

“I … understand why white people wouldn’t like Rachel … But maybe the reason white people don’t understand Rachel Jeantel has something more to do with white privilege than what they could call Jeantel’s capricious nature,” she wrote.

But Ms. Coleman’s contention that jurors should accept that blacks and whites often live in different worlds rather than as equal members of a polyglot American society is a problematic explanation, writes J. Christian Adams on the Pajamas Media website.

“Coleman sounds like John C. Calhoun, the South’s leading defender of slavery and segregation,” he writes. “Calhoun believed that blacks and whites could never live together, and that after any emancipation they’d forever be ‘worlds apart.’”

re: How Rachel Jeantel went from star witness to 'train wreck'

the media has fricking gone insane

quote:

she represented part of the problem of the case – an America so divided, that many can’t “code-switch,” or move between the gauzy racial, cultural, and socioeconomic divides that have become hardened with the nation’s first black president, and which have helped fuel political polarization.

this one paragraph is literally bull shite. this case has nothing to do with obama. the one group who is acting as a mindless bloc is black america...not the racist whites (i mean frick, tons of whites are on the #justicefortrayvon bandwagon)

secondly, viewers didn't have problems "code switching", and i'm including both her peers watching this unfold on tv and lame whiteys listening to her testify. i know i'm in a somewhat unique position, but i could understand everything she said (when she wasn't talking low)

this isn't some cultural issue. this is a jeantel issue. the media really is fricking insane right now...if this case has done anything, it's shown just how far the media will go to protect the narratives they create

An individual's veracity has nothing to do with skin color. It has to do with telling the truth.

Whether an individual factually committed murder has nothing to do with ethnic background. It has to do with fact.

The concept that folks would argue differently is disgusting. It beckons days of past ugliness where bias rather than fact influenced justice in this country.

So the fact that she wasn't even at the scene, committed perjury in an earlier deposition, and can't read the letter she claims to have written because it is in cursive isn't what discredits her as a witness. It's because the jury is racist? The trial isn't even over. We don't have a verdict yet. You know things are bad when the damage control comes out before the damage.

Indeed. I've been shouting this from the rooftops for several years now.

Apparently one can't question the legitimacy of a letter claimed to be written by a witness only to find they can no longer read it.

exactly.

If I am a juror I am looking for facts, and the things listed above
would tend to show me that this witness doesn't really have any.

that ebony article i made a thread about is the worst offender as of now. it basically tells balck people who have rejected the shitty ghetto culture in order to have success in their lives, to not "forget where they came from" and defend Jeantels.

Given the three facts you just stated, how is it that a cottage industry of people defending her has arisen? And what are we to conclude about those people and their motives?

and funny enough, when goode had some inconsistencies in his original statement and testimony, the same people who defended/excused Jeantel's perjury, attacked the shite out of him

If I am a juror I'm looking at her testimony realizing that she is indeed on the phone with TM. I know from the timing of the events, and the paths taken, or possible taken by both TM, and GZ, then judging from where the encounter took place, that she is lying in her testimony, and she knows TM doubled back for them to meet where they did.

What is there to understand about her? She lied under oath and can't read her own letter. She has a shitty attitude and looks one pound cake away from the diabetes pain train. Sorry but recognizing she is not a credible witness has nothing to do about people being racist. Just calling a duck a duck.

I loved the article from a few days that described Jeantel as "multilingual" because she speaks Ebonics. Dead serious article trying to defend her.

a meme has developed claiming she speaks creole and spanish, but i don't think any actual evidence has been shown to prove this

i'm not saying she doesn't, but people are in the "let's just make fricking shite up" phase of this whole discussion. this is best seen with articles written explaining that she didn't call the cops for cultural reasons, even though her own testimony proved that had nothing to do with it

So if you're black and don't stand up for black trash, then you're not black enough?

ebony's article telling educated, well-to-do black people that they should defend the culture they rejected to better themselves pretty much was making that statement. they even said successful black people shouldn't forget where they came from, even though the rejection of "where they came from" is how they bettered themselves

So, in their opinion, you can never really get away from what every black person should be striving to get away from? Nice.

basically what it comes off as, which is terrible

it's part of a larger group association by race

i go into this in my other thread, but i really do think that many lower class black people honestly do not realize that white people by and large do not do this. we segregate, mock, exclude, and generally hate the shite out of all sorts of other white people

Every time they pull in the obligatory bumper-sticker-sloganeering, fancy-pants Race Grievance Industry PHD-type who has been conditioned by the slack-jawed stares of his Undergrad captive-audience, I remind myself that nonsense is quite literally their profession. Just as with our political system, with The University, we have elevated the worst amongst us, to the highest positions.

Keep in mind that it is not likely that anybody named George Ciccariello-Maher is able to orgasm without a finger up his butt. That may color his commentary.
