re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

the highest TOPS level is 70% of tuition only. You can not give partial schollies in football or men and womens bb. If YOU are on some other type of scholly in these sports you count against the total allowable number.LSU under bertman gave very few full ride athletic schollies to baseball players. oos students are not eligible for TOPS.

It is a huge advantage. LSU gets to save money on schollys for in state players and can use that money to recruit better out of state players like Bregman.

Remember that TOPS only covers a partial% of tuition. A full scholarship covers 100% of tuition, room and board and books. Not sure that any baseball player gets a 100% scholly. So TOPS help some for the out of state guys because the 11.7 tuitions can be be split them and hopefully the in state guys qualify for TOPS.

Wrong...if you don't have to give schollies to in state kids, you have more schollies for out of state kids, thus they benefit

Yes, it is an advantage, and has been for some time. Its a common gripe from the gumps, but what's the alternative, not make athletes eligible? Thats fricking retarded.

TOPS is something all high school students in La are eligible for, athletes should not be excluded. It wasn't put in place for or because of athletes and in state schools, but it is certainly an advantage.

The La system is nothing close to a "lottery" system. It must be earned by the student ans student athlete.

Academic scholarships count towards the scholarship limit in football and basketball, so there is no advantage. Baseball can use academic scholarships.

Right. And the player is likely to get more aid from TOPS than from a partial scholarship.

I'm friends with a former baseball player and that is basically what happened. He had offers from a few SEC schools including LSU. LSU's offer was the lowest (like .1 or something) but it was more than made up for in TOPS. The other sports work differently but I know for sure it is a huge advantage for baseball.

It has to be earned every where. TOPS is available because of the lottery. They aren't just giving bright futures schollies to kids in Florida with 2.0 gpas

Its an advantage but it doesn't ensure LSU won't miss out of a top recruit enamoured with another coach or program.

But it is definitely advantageous to LSU's baseball program.

Yes. When you can get in state kids money from TOPS, it frees up baseball money for other kids. You can't do it for football or basketball, but it for sure helps in baseball.

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

First of all, baseball has been decimated by the NCAA, those athletes cannot hope to get a full scholarship, thanks to political correctness and the lap-dog-mentality-of-the-NCAA's leadership.

Second of all, ONLY LOUISIANA ATHLETES CAN UTILIZE TOPS, GIVEN THE NORMAL LAY OF THE LAND. There are instances where young people from military families and outsiders who established residency for 2 year, where they can qualify for TOPS. However, you cannot get TOPS if you are recruited in a sport, from out of state, that IS NOT AN EXCEPTION OF LOSFA.......PERIOD.

SO...the Mississippi fans who talk about this, don't know what they are talking about. But like the USL fans, they are envious of their shadow....they are needy, in general, and in that set of needs is a need for more education. I don't mean to disparage those folks more than they-disparage-themselves, but they really are barking up the wrong tree, and they are probably Bulldoggies, who have finally advanced to a championship game, looking like cowyard thugs, so they can just shut up

No, they're actually quite right. Any time additional scholarship money is available, regardless of its limitation, there is an advantage created. Even CPM has spoken of this advantage in the past.

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

If i understand correctly, Its not really an advantage because there is a limit of scholarship players for each team. Tops scholarships count towards this just like a baseball scholarship does. So you can fill up your team with smart kids on TOPS, or kids that come to play baseball, either way it counts towards your limit. Most teams split up their baseball scholarships to be able to give more players partial scholarships but a player cant recieve TOPS and a partial baseball scholarship. And TOPS guys cant play baseball unless they count towards the total. So like someone posted earlier, the guys with TOPS who want to walk on are the ones who really get screwed.

So the only advantage this would give is if a player from LA, is only offered a half baseball scholarship from an out of state school, but could use his TOPS at LSU instead and get a full scholarship. But the full scholarship would count towards LSU's total, while out of state, he would only get a half, but would only count as a half towards their total,so its a wash. Might even be a disadvantage because LSU probably gets less walk ons because guys would have to give up TOPS to play baseball and not count towards the scholarship total.

I think Raph actually paid his way to school, to free up a scholarship, but i could be wrong about that.

I think this rule was made because Georgia had something like this before anyone else and were able to sign more players than everyone else, and put a lot of them on academic and still have the baseball scholarships. This is what your MS friends are talking about.

Somebody feel free to correct me if im wrong, but this is my understanding of the rules.

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

Its amazing to see the level of misunderstanding about this. Its a huge advantage for LSU in baseball recruiting. There are just shy of 12 schollys for baseball, and a team has a limited number of roster spots which is somewhere around 30. For a school without TOPs, they have to divide these scholarships among these players. Usually there are a few studs that get close to a full scholarship follwed by some middle of the road guys who get half schollys and then a hodge podge of guys that pay their own way.
For Louisiana schools, A kid that gets TOPS can come as a walk-on, and not take up any of the 11.75 scholarship dollars. This enables coaches to essentially pick guys that they get "for free" and go to the Bregman, Gausmans of the world and offer a full ride.
In any given year there may be 8-10 Louisiana kids good enough to help LSU in some capacity, and of that group, the ones that can get TOPS will have an edge on getting an "offer" for a Roster spot.

re: Does TOPS Give LSU an advantage in recruiting?

So out of 30 roster spots, there is no limit of how many can be on scholarship? As long as only 11.75 are for baseball scholarship?

Huge advantage if so. I thought they fixed this loophole. I know there was talk about it.
