The Clinton Legacy

Where does it stand now that the last remnant of his blatantly homophobic agenda has been stuck down by the SCOTUS?

I'd give a good bit to have his leadership back in the Oval office right now.

I disagreed with much of his policy positions (since I am a smaller gov guy). But, IF Clinton had been in office instead of both W and Obama...I'd be much happier.

re: The Clinton Legacy

Well, to give you a little history lesson, DOMA was a compromise to prevent a Constitutional Amendment banning same-sex marriage.

You see, a long long long time ago in America, there were these right wing extremists who said if Ellen and Portia get married, dogs will sleep with cats, mountains will tumble, oceans will ignite in fire. They feared if Hawaii's law on same sex marriage (there was a court case re this back then) remains, because of the privileges and immunities clause, every state will have to recognize gay marriages from Hawaii. So the push began for a Constitutional Amendment.

Clinton, knowing that once an Amendment passed, it would be extremely difficult to get rid of, supported DOMA and that allowed for gay marriages states but that other states and the federal govt would not recognize them.

So while it did hurt marriage equality in some respects, it greatly helped in other ways.

I forgot about NAFTA. Between that, DODT, and DOMA has there even been a more bigoted president in our nation's history?

Did raise the Interstate speed limit from 55 to 70. I'll credit him that one.

Let me give you another history lesson.

You seen a long long long long time ago, there were these extreme right wingers who hated the gays. Clinton attempted to lift the ban against gays in the military and the mean right wingers threw a hissy fit. This was yet another one of Clinton's great compromises. You can be gay, just don't let anyone know.

quote:

Congress rushed to enact the existing gay ban policy into federal law, outflanking Clinton's planned repeal effort. Clinton called for legislation to overturn the ban, but encountered intense opposition from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, members of Congress, and portions of the public. DADT emerged as a compromise policy.[33] Congress included text in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1994 (passed in 1993) requiring the military to abide by regulations essentially identical to the 1982 absolute ban policy.[34] The Clinton Administration on December 21, 1993,[35] issued Defense Directive 1304.26, which directed that military applicants were not to be asked about their sexual orientation.[34] This is the policy now known as "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". The phrase was coined by Charles Moskos, a military sociologist.

Isn't it amazing how nuts right wingers were back then?

VB,

I love you. But, show me a man with an excellent excuse and I'll show you a man who NEEDS one.

You keep "explaining" things with 'those other bastards made it that way'.

So, your defense of Clinton is that he was a spineless pussy completely controlled by lunatics. Well played.

He faced bat shite crazy Republicans just as Obama has. His way of dealing with it was compromise. That's why some here think he was better than Obama.

And what did he get for all his compromises?

Impeached.

It's one of the reasons I've taken to calling him Mr. Sulu. His deflector shields are always up.

No.

He was impeached for lying under oath. No more. No less.
