.....Need help deciding weekend plans...

Long story short, I was supposed to go snapper fishing on my father's boat. Well, he just called and said he's having serious engine issues and this weekend is a no go for offshore fishing on his boat.
I have an 18' bay boat and feel confident in the boat/engine.
Should I play it safe and stay inshore and chase after trout/reds?
Try to venture out to some of the closer rigs near GI?
Stay at home and cut grass?
The weather looks great, 1 footers, should be lots of boats out in case something happens, and I've taken my little bay boat on some 60 plus mile round trips out of Venice to the barrier islands. Should I risk it?

That's the truth...last year, we were fishing for snapper about 25 miles out and a 16' bateau drove up next to us. That was in 2-3 foot seas...guy and his young kid.

If you head out of fourchon, south timb 67 isn't very far and it holds some decent snapper.

Man, I'm just a little hesitant due to the random thunderstorm patter...

Man, I go out very often in a 18 ft Carolina skiff. You'll be fine. You don't need to go too far out of belle pass.

I hear ya, I changed my mind, I think we're going out to some of those 7-10 mile rigs. Maybe chase some mangroves and hopefully a cobia or two.

We went 2 weeks ago to the 7-12 mi rigs, caught 8 red snapper and 42 mangroves.

In that 18' skiff?
We usually go out to some of the 21-25 mile rigs (during snapper season) in my father's 23' sea cat. I fell a helluva lot better when we're in that boat.
That being said, I've gone out there numerous times in my brother's 19' boat, but we've had more predictable weather patters when we've done that.

About 11 the boomers have been kicking up offshore and get worse as day progresses. I'd be cool with a quick one, but watch the clouds around you, and make the run in if it looks like its about to kick up. It does go back to glass, but its ugly while its passing.

Yeah, the debate for me is to fly fish for reds in some duck ponds out in Point a la Hache. I know we'll have some success, it'll be a good time, and I won't have to worry about the weather as much.

Red Snapper season is over after this weekend and I haven't had the chance to go out this year. I feel confident in my boat, but honestly...it's closer to a flats boat than a traditional bay boat.
I've taken it out in some solid 2 footers in getting to Chandeleur islands...but that's still mostly protected waters.
I'm thinking, why not...if it looks bad, just fish the beach
