re: Rate/Rank the current form of the USMNT

If you can overlook the Poland train wreck, the 2002 World Cup team played the best stretch of games I've seen from the national team.

In some ways, the 2009 win over Spain was our peak. We had a stretch of five halves of soccer were we beat the champions of Africa, Europe, and South America by a combined score of 7-0. Several players were at their peaks, including: Donovan, Howard, Charlie Davies, Bocanegra, DeMerit, and Onyewu. At the same time, Bornstein and Conor Casey saw the field in that game.

he had his time. Was he one of our best defenders of all time? yeah. But he wasn't world class before the injury, even with that switch to Milan. After the injury it was painful. He was a great big man defender for us, he wasn't great at all playing the ball out of the back.

Yea I'm mainly just partial to him because he went to Clemson while I was there, real nice dude. I liked the phyical presence he brought and still thought his best ball would've been in front of him.

After the injury, he had no future, just brutally bad.

Gooch's return in the World Cup warm up match against the Czech Republic was so sad to watch. He could barely jump and gave up an easy header for a goal. I can't believe he played as much as he did in the World Cup.

He's still one of my favorite players evar.

Gooch and Davies are the sad stories of the USMNT. I still get mildly depressed when I think about Davies, especially.

What did y'all think of Eddie Johnson's play? I really wasn't impressed. I felt like his first touch is so bad that when he moved centrally to receive the ball his only option was to go backwards with it.

I didn't think that he played very well, but I don't necessarily think that it was a bad game for him. I think that he performed adequately in DMB's absence, but he's still the same Eddie Johnson who has trouble with teams that are organized and defend well.

I think that he has a limited, but useful, role in the national team, and he'll always be the scourge of CONCACAF's bottom feeders.

Yea. They're both the kind of injuries other major programs could sustain but really hurt an emerging squad program like USMNT.

Ugh, I try not to think of them too much :bah:

Not that what happened to Davies and Gooch was their fault, but it seems like in the past who had a lot of guys with great potential not live up to it. But now, more and more players are living up to that potential. That's just kind of my opinion I guess but that's a pretty good testament to our youth program and coaches.

What happened to Davies was 100% his fault.

Broke curfew.

Got in a car with a drunk driver.

Has money to pay for a taxi but doesn't.

Lots of people do lots of stupid things that don't turn out that badly. But it does suck that it was basically self inflicted

Chad was one of my all time favorite tigers, I'm happy he managed to get back in shape enough to be picked in the mlb draft.
