Sucks. Those sprint cars are dangerous, I'm surprised so many NASCAR drivers continue to race them after reaching the top series.

RIP Jason Leffler.
How many fatalities is this since Earnhardt?

This wasn't a NASCAR event. I'd say there are many that happen that you never hear about.

Hard to answer that with a specific number. There are numerous styles of racing in different types of vehicles. There's been a few racing deaths, but 0 in a NASCAR event.

It's awful, the feeling I have right now makes me thankful I was just young enough when Earnhardt died to not quite understand the impact of it.
If that happened today, or if I had been 22 then, I can't imagine how it would've effected me.
ETA: not to mitigate at all the significance of this terrible accident, it's awful

I don't think sprints are all that dangerous and they re a blast to drive and race.grew up around dirt racing and have family that still races late models only death I can ever remember is a freak accident and it was a 4banger and the way he hit the wall just cracked his neck.
Sprint cars to have the ability to have incredible looking flips but are safe. There are thousands of sprint races alone every weekend and deaths are rare. My dad is hick enough (builds racing engines) and still subscribes to national dirt racing newspaper and the deaths are extremely rare based on numbers. Although ere was a bad wreck few months ago that killed 2.
If ever get the chance I highly recommend a world of outlaw sprint or havatampa(whatever it's called now)late model race it's a blast

Huh? They are as safe as ever. No one has died in Cup Seies since Dale E. I dont think he was driving a car. Looks more like a rally vehicle on a dirt track, from the pics. Sounds like he went into cardiac arrest.

He's talking bout a sprint car not NASCAR series sprint.
It's a dirt track car not a rally
sprint car fun

RIP Jason.
He had been running Williams Grove a lot. He picked the toughest area in the country to race for sure.
Every year there's probably 2-3 sprint car deaths nationally I'd say. Bridgeport I think is a really big track, over a half mile, usually tracks are smaller and the speeds stay down.

RIP Jason, you died doing what you love.
...I always seem to take for granted just how dangerous racing is until one of these incidents happens and I get reminded of the harsh reality of how brutal and dangerous it truly is..
