re: NFL Live/ Twitter top five NFL Head Coaches

Bill is my clear cut #1

Sean, Jim and John, Tomlin, McCarthy and Coughlin all could be debated for the next spots.

Smith is a good coach, but has won no meaningful games while having a team loaded with talent.

Carroll also doesn't belong anywhere near the top 5.

Coughlin should be a clear #2. He took a new franchise, Jax, to two AFC championships. Not to mention his two Super Bowls in NY. None of those other coaches, maybe even Bill, have his resume.

Mike Smith doesn't sniff that list. He's got a ton of talent he can do nothing with.

Some of you need to get the homerism out of your system. Mike Smith is a really good coach. He hasn't fared too well against NO as an overall record but that's not what this stat is about.

He hasn't done anything with that talent? They almost made it to the Super Bowl last year man. The few playoff games before that, they simply ran into buzzsaw of teams that went on to win the Super Bowl.

Now, I will say the Top 5 might be a bit high for him. I'd put him in the top 10. Also, I'd put Payton in the top 5-10 range as well. I really think this will be a good year to see what Payton is as a coach. If the Saints don't make the playoffs, people should get off his jock a bit and realize Payton might just be a product of Drew Brees's domination on the field the previous 5-6 years.

Mike Smith can't even control his blood pressure. How will he ever control a team?

In week 1 he won't have any control... over Steven Jackson going beastmode on that D.

It's not homerism. Nobody mentioned Mike McCarthy, and he won a Super Bowl. Nobody has a personal vendetta against him.

Good coaches don't go for it on 4th and 1 at the 29 in overtime.

You need to win more than 1 playoff game in 5 years to be considered elite. No Saints fan would have considered Jim Mora as a top 5 coach at any point in his career.

I just simply and 150% disagree. For example, had Turner not sucked and gotten the 1-2 yards needed - would that make him a "better" coach?
Or, let's play this game - If the Saints don't recover the onside kick right after halftime in the SB and the Colts go on to win that SB - is Sean Payton a shitty coach?

No, but Mike Smith is.

The Falcons GM set Smith up with talent to compete. And they do. The coach gets them to the next level. And he hasn't. Its that simple.

ETA: Payton took an exiled team with few returning players and got the NFCCG. Drew couldn't throw down the field for 4-5 weeks into the season and had 3 white starting LBs. frick Mike Smith.

Turner didn't suck. Smith was stupid. Everybody in the Georgia Dome knew he was getting the ball.

Fwiw I'd put Smith in the 7-10 range.

The Falcons have a shite load of talent, but have underperformed in the post season.
So far;
Mike Smith - excellent regular season coach, awful post-season coach.

I can agree with that... and even to expand...

Like I said. I'd put Belichick, both Harbaughs, Payton, Coughlin, Tomlin, Fox, and probably McCarthy, Reid and Shanahan ahead of him. I'd have him in front of Carroll, Kubiak, and Marvin Lewis
