When I had my deck built, I lacked the foresight to use screws. Now some of the nails are backing out, and as they do, I want to pull them and replace them with screws. What is the BEST screw to use on the coast that won't back out and won't rust.

you need one that's big enough to fill the hole of the nail... do galvanized ones... i don't know what the shite i'm talking about after that... make sure its long enough to reach... broads hate it when they don't get screwed right.

I used some galvanized steel deck screws but some folks prefer stainless steel. My screws still haven't rusted and it has been three years since I made a few repairs to the deck at my house.

How thick are the boards?

We used a corded version of this and it worked very well...

But that is going to cost you a fortune. Your wood will rot before a good galvanized screw will rust.

Who is your deck guy? I need someone down there.

That screw gun I posted used screws that come preloaded on strips. The gun comes up to RPM speed, preloads and you can screw a ton of screws in a short time. They come in stainless and a coated screw. Stainless looks to be about double in price ($94 vs $42). You can rescrew an entire deck in an afternoon if the wood is not a 2x. The screws are made for deck boards and there isn't enough length to screw 2x boards properly...

Do either galvanized or those tan coated screws with the weird head that requires it's own bit. Comes with the bit.

They make a deck screw that's coated, tan or green color, HD and lowes both carry them. Galv screws will get eaten up by the deck boards if its the new treated kind. If they are coming up, pull the nails and flip it over and screw back down in the middle and it will flatten back out. Then catch the corners.

Friend of mine is a carpenter and swears by the tan coated ones. As a matter of fact, he said he doesn't know why they make anything else.

They usually have a Torx head, which allows much greater torque transference to the screw. Torx >>>>>> phillips
