NCAA president Mark Emmert met with Big 12 leaders Wednesday, hinting that a possible fourth subdivision of larger schools could happen within the NCAA's framework.

Dodds suggested Thursday at the Big 12's spring meetings that some of the larger schools in the NCAA have problems that are unique to them among college athletic institutions.

Some have speculated the fourth subdivision would include teams from the five power football conferences.

it may look like a debatable subject on the surface, but he's working an angle of some sort

A modest proposal:

Soccer style relegation system. Every year, the worst team in each BCS conference gets demoted and the champion of each coalition conference gets promoted.

Modest proposal II:

This is used only for football. MBB goes back to a more traditional grouping, such as the pre-Florida State ACC. That way hoops can stick to its own, unique traditions.

For non revenue sports, do away with conferences and have compact geographic regions. It's dumb for LSU to send the men's golf team or the women's gymnastics team to places like Lexington. In the little sports, we should be competing against in-state schools and schools from neighboring states.

Relegation would not work in CFB. Too much turnover in players. One team can be completely different from the next years team. For better or worse.

People bitch about preseason rankings based on previous years team before they do anything. Imagine if you base the whole sport on how a team did the previous year.

DEAR GOD PLEASE LET THIS HAPPEN.

I have been saying that this should happen for years.

Big 12, Big 10, SEC, ACC, Pac 12 should be in their own division.

This makes a lot of sense, so good chance it will never happen. Totally agree that for non-revenue sports they should just do it regionally. Then have the top teams from each region compete for the national title at the end

I'm willing to guess the turnover in soccer is much less than college football.

youd be surprised. it probably isnt as glaring as in cfb but there are still some significant turnovers with all of the buying and selling and such.

I can see that. But you gotta think about college. They have a forced turnover. A player gets 4 years of playing. And I'd bet most significantly contribute for less than 2.5 years.

Soccer and other pro sports probably have a good number of players who have been there longer than 4 years.

this is just going for soccer since this obviously isn the case with other major sports here in the states.

but that is true but mainly with just the larger clubs. if the smaller clubs have someone thats showing promise the Man U's Chelsea's and Real Madrid's of the world are on them almost immediately offering more money than can realistically be passed up. Thus resulting in their best players, who may have been the reason for a promotion, leaving and leaving the team out to dry the following season.

Again not trying to say the turnover in soccer is as big as cfb, but its definitely there.

I agree. Relegation would be cool. It would just kinda be weird to see a team like Auburn with Cam be in a lower league. Then get promoted and be awful the next season.

MLB might need relegation to fix teams like the Astros and the Marlins but I don't see how relegation would work in BCS football when the network deals etc are signed with conferences

If they want congress to stay out of things further, this is the wrong way to go. They would be effectively crushing athletic programs of numerous State universities.
