It was a running-oriented league back in the day, so you had to be able to run the ball. Here's some overall NFL league stats in 1970 - leading passer had less than 3,000 yeards passing.

Good point. Thus only 4 receivers...

The Saints dumped Billy Kilmer, Jim Otis, and Kenny Burrough after the 1970 season.

Kilmer led the Redskins to the Super Bowl
Otis had a 1000 yard rushing season
Burrough had a 1000 yard receiving season

Brilliant, I tell you.

A whole different league back then. Yards were spread paper thin. Only 2 RBs had over 1000 yards and only 2 more had over 900. 4 Recievers over 1000 yards.

The QBs threw ducks everywhere. Look at the damn interception totals for some of these guys. 15 Players with at least 6 Interceptions compared to 6 last year. And remember there were less 6 less teams back then and 2 less games per team. The most accurate passer would have been tied for 17th this year, etc.

The Kickers were awful. League Leader Garo Yepremian would have finished 29th in the league in %.

Fun stuff. Crazy how much things changed.

That makes what lsutigers said even worse.

The Saints are a franchise with a long and storied tradition of making horrible player-personnel decisions demonstrating an utter lack of ability to scout and evaluate NFL talent.

Let's hope those days are over, because, we can learn from our past mistakes.

Billy Kilmer was ancient. They drafted Archie. It was the right decision in rebuilding mode. Kilmer got lucky. He fit in perfect with George Allen's philosophy and Sonny Jurgensen's injury.

Double O Burrough was stupid. He was a player. If he plays on a team less conservative than a Bum Phillips team, he would have been a superstar.

Don't remember much about Jim Otis. All I know was he ran for 1000 yards in a Don Coryell passing offense where Terry Metcalf was the feature back. He couldn't have been that bad.
