This season's Next Food Network Star "contestants"

Ive thought the last several seasons of NFNS have been basically rigged, with contestants suddenly coming up with a unique and rounded out "POV" midway through the season even though they never showed a smidgeon of it previously. The exception to this was last season, when the hipster kid was pretty much an Alton Brown clone from the start and destined to win.
With that said, I think Food Network jumped the shark this season. These contestants are supposed to be "culinary experts" first and foremost. So what do we get?
1) Danushka Lysek - an ex model that competed on Chopped, and only survived the first round because another competitor forgot an ingredient (which is basically an auto DQ)
2) Rodney Henry - a baker who was eliminated in the first round of Chopped.
3) Stacy Poon Keney - a woman whose restaurant was so shitty it had to be rescued on Robert Irvine's Restaurant: Impossible.
thats a quarter of the field. would any of those people be considered "culinary experts"? doubtful. very doubtful.

The chick who won with the 10 dollar meals wasn't an "expert" either. They're just trying to get someone that sells and has a good knowledge of food. I think they feel if they can get someone with the personality...they can teach them more about food.
Chopped is a difficult show. I think they probably saw something in those two when they were on, they just maybe didn't execute in that situation.

Did the kid from last season even do a show? I haven't seen shite. This is just a money grab for food network anyway.

and that kid was pretty darn good too. He wasn't afraid to try and fail.

he did a couple of specials, hasnt done a weekly series though. my guess is they shot a pilot and it was actually too similar to Good Eats.

Too similar to good eats so it gets canned? That show was greatness.

Would that be a bad thing though? Good Eats was and still is the best show Food Network has ever had.

I don't think a 20 minute cooking competition like Chopped really proves or disproves anything with these contestants.
That being said, this show is more about TV personality than actual ability to cook. It is, after all, the show that gave us Guy Fieri.

Guy seems to be the only one that became anything after his apprearance on next star. That Jeff guy still has some shows running but all the rest seem to die off pretty quickly.

one was eliminated in the first round, and the other passed the first round because of a DQ. thats a pitiful performance.

that viet pham dude will run through the season. and he's a prick.

Right, but a 20 minute cooking performance isn't indicative of their ability to host a cooking show.
Chopped is a completely different format than anything they will ever have to do. I'd bet there are tons of excellent cooks who would be terrible on Chopped, doesn't mean they don't know how to cook.

but its a pretty public failure which took place on their own network. how many people auditioned for this show? tens of thousands im sure.
apparently Food Network is more interested in the fact they have some sort of name recognition and would rather start from there than from scratch.
(another contestant lost on ICA, but there is certainly no shame in losing to an iron chef)
the selection of the restaurant impossible lady is truly mind boggling though.

I wish Alton Brown did something else besides NFNS and Iron Chef. I really don't care for those shows but I love him. Feasting on Asphalt 1 & 2 and Feasting on Waves are some of the best shows ever on Food Network.

She was bad at running the business. I think she was not interested in opening for dinner because she had kids. Irvine set her straight. The food wasn't the big problem from what I recall.

I doubt these guys are on the show because of any sort of name recognition, in fact the reason they are on NFNS is the same reason they were selected to be on Chopped and RI...personality shown in their video applications.

she has ZERO credibility on food network. none. who the hell is interested in watching a food show hosted by a lady who was so shitty at her food business it had to be "rescued"?

It's basically American Idol at this point. It doesn't matter who's in it or who wins because a month after the Finale you'll probably never see them again.
