When did Stratego Change?

We bought Stratego yesterday and started playing. My son is 6, so this is the only version he knows.

So now the soldiers are spacemen, 10 is the best instead of 1, and there is the addition of the "Spotter" pieces that seem to throw off the game play.

Granted, my old board was probably from 1985, but is new version considered normal or just some bastardized variant? I want my son to get used to the board that his friends will have, but I prefer the old version.
