My little brother and I are about to spend the day giving this old yard ornament a little attention. We plan on sanding it, flex-sealing the leaks, and repainting. Whats the best way, after sanding, to prep the surface for the new coat of paint?

I was thinking acetone but I'm open to suggestion. We'll be outside going to town with wire brushes but I'll check back in a few, TIA.

Update, took it out last Sunday and it didn't sink.

Thanks to everyone who helped, paint seems to be holding up really well after finding the right primer.

Acetone or any degreaser should be fine. What kind of paint do you plan on using?

just scuff it up with some scotch brite, and use a etching primer. It bonds great on aluminum, then you can use any paint you wnat.

Thanks all

This will work well. Camo paint jobs work great on a Job boat.

If you don't use epoxy or self etch primer, it will peel in a few years.

Looks good.

I wish I could find an old one like that laying around. I need a camp boat.

If you do just make sure to take your time with any leaks.

Flex seal isn't the best for good sized ones, it tends to split as it cures if it's on too thick and makes things worse. Use epoxy, would have saved us some time starting with that and finishing with a thin coat of flex.
