The glory days of Baton Rouge Public High School football

Since I've joined TD I've heard a lot of posters talking about how bad BR public high school football has gotten, and its not what it use to be. They talk about how Memorial Stadium use to be packed with 20,000 plus for big games and the fan support was better. They also talk about how the privates and the suburban schools have taken over in football because of "white flight" and politics etc... Anybody have any good stories or experiences they could share about the "glory days" of public high school football in Baton Rouge? Do you think there is any chance of football in BR getting back to a similar level?

BTW it's not just in Baton Rouge it's in most urban areas.
Back 30 or more years ago - most places only had 3-4 TV channels. Most people went to schools in their neighborhood - with kids they grew up with and the schools had community support.
As times changed so did that. I remember Public school games in Nola having huge crowds in late 70s and early 80s.... but NOTHING like the early 70s.

FWIW, my uncle was one of FIVE guys to sign with LSU from Tara in '72
i think high school football went to shite when they did away with "neighborhood schools". like the above poster said, the community the school was in would support it b/c their kids, grandkids, etc played for the school.

What King said. Judge Parker ruined BR HS football, really, the whole system failure is at his drunken feet.
Imagine watching Mike Dellacano at QB, Albert Richardson at LB and Eugene Daniel at DB on my Lee High team, or a Baker backfield that lined up Hokie and the Jones twins.

As someone who is under 30 and did not get to experience this, I hope that we can someday go back to this model.

When I lived in BR in the 70s. Istrouma, lee, Tara, McKinley, Scotlandville were good. Istrouma was blue collar tough

Tara was 1974 state champs....
again guys it aint just baton rouge... this problem is everywhere...
I remember seeing East Jeff and West Jeff with standing room only in early 70s.. then... maybe 200 at a game a few years back.

No flame, but this is one thing I have enjoyed upon my return to Texas. The atmosphere of games is big almost anywhere in the state, small town or big city. I wish I could have witnessed some of that when I lived in LA.

Broadmoor and Belaire were actually pretty decent in the early to mid 90's, so was Glen Oaks
