If you are traveling a ways , I would use a soft chest. 5 reds can create a lot of drag when your paddling a few miles in at the end of the day.

That's what I was thinking. I am just worried about space.

Either is fine right now, but a cooler is better as it gets hotter. Besides, where you gonna put the beer?

I put a milk crate behind my seat and put 3 pieces of PVC on it for 2 extra rod holders and a net. I would usually bring a jug of water and a couple plano water tight boxes for my bait. Had plenty of room for extra bs in crate.

Exact set up I have planned except have a boga instead of a net. However, I would have to put the cooler between my legs because it is a 10' yak.

Sometimes I will keep all me beer in the soft ice chest also. Then I dunk them in the water to clean them before drinking. That way I only have to bring one chest.

I'm not above fishy beer. Hell, I hope all my beer is fishy tomorrow.

Stringer is fine, just pull it into the yak before you paddle away. Get a soft cooler though if you plan on doing this more than once. Much easier.

California Innovation Cooler

I've had several, and they work great. Downside is with spiny saltwater fish they develop leaks fast. They still work great, but do not leave the fish in them when you put them in the car, or be prepared for stinky fish water. In truck bed, no problem. I just bring an ice chest, pull out my beers, then dump the fish in the ice chest and wash out the CI Cooler at the launch before leaving.

add a fish weigh bag to the CI cooler bag and for $25 you have a sturdy, fin resistant, easy to clean kayak fish bag.
