He was also widely noted for having drilled a hole in his safety helmet so that he could smoke while racing, and for installing cigarette lighters in his race cars

Old school, tough arse race driver. A legend even before he drove his first NASCAR race.

I'm talking on track. Neither of us know what demons he dealt with internally.

So weird, listened to an interview he did last Thursday on NASCAR radio with Dave Moody. I've been a NASCAR fan my whole life but being 22 I knew who he was but not much about him. Never knew how well he had done for himself up north and that he didn't come to NASCAR til later in his career.

Just crazy seemed like a happy guy joking around laughing and enjoying life

Trickle’s granddaughter Nicole Ann Bowman was killed in a 2001 car accident in front of East Lincoln High School and is buried in the cemetery where police found his truck and body.

Tom Higgins, a longtime NASCAR writer and friend of Trickle’s, said the former race car driver was distraught after his granddaughter’s death.

“He never, ever got over that,” Higgins said.

Moody did an interview with Kenny Wallace shortly after the announcement of his death.

Wallace said that in the last few months Trickle had become more distant. He was in a lot of pain and Dr's were not sure what the pain was from.

Maybe he found out he was going to die and didn't want to go on with a long drawn out painful death.

ETA: His wife is still living.

Also, his nephew and racer, Chris Trickle was killed in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1998.
