@LarryHolder: RT @MikeTriplett: Akiem Hicks starting out as defensive end in #Saints' new 3-4 defense LINK

quote:

Among the more noteworthy nuggets from Wednesday night was the fact that Akiem Hicks is starting out at defensive end in the New Orleans Saints' new 3-4 defense. Originally, the Saints had tentatively planned to start Hicks at nose tackle, then cross-train him at end. But they probably shifted gears after drafting nose tackle John Jenkins.

It shouldn't matter too much with Hicks, who figures to play all three defensive line spots as a heavily-used backup. I picture him being used in a similar way that former LSU lineman Ricky Jean-Francois was used with the San Francisco 49ers in recent years (a comparison that Hicks agreed with). Hicks said he expects to play all three spots, which he said he had always done in the past while playing in three-man fronts in college.

Previously, I noted that second-year lineman Tyrunn Walker will also start out at nose tackle. Also on Wednesday night at guard Ben Grubbs' charity softball game, linebacker Martez Wilson specified that he is starting out at the strong-side linebacker spot (over the tight end), where he'll compete for playing time with newly signed Victor Butler. But those outside linebacker spots can also be interchangeable.

The one player I'm still most curious to find out about is veteran Will Smith, who has been a 4-3 end throughout his career. I think Smith will be a good fit as a 3-4 end, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him used as the "joker" outside linebacker at times since that position lines up as an edge rusher on the line of scrimmage so often.

Might want to add "out" to the title, though I wouldn't rule out his starting either. .

Dude just needs to be on the field period.

Walker is another guy I like. I think he'll fit perfect into this 1 gap system.

I can't wait.

I guess that dampens the hopes of anyone hoping to see Wilson at the other ILBer.

Not exactly. We're going to run a lot of odd formations. He's going to be all over the field. Ryan uses a lot of movement. I think Ryan said people spend about 40% or less in base formations.

Martez told my friend in a DM who is close with him that he's gonna be a hybrid linebacker

Walker could be another one of these udfa finds under payton. I can't wait for TC and Pre-Season to get here.

Amoeba = organized chaos

Expect to see pressure come from any & everywhere along with more forced turnovers. Just think back to how many problems the amoeba looks caused that Ryan threw at the Saints offense in 2011 when he was the DC in Cleveland.

Exactly. He's going to utilize his guys all over the field all while very generous getting linebackers in the field. I wouldn't be surprised to see Wilson, Galette, and Butler all on the field at the same time.
Another benefit is that Drew has really struggled with these types of defense in the past. Having to practice again someone like Rob Ryan who has really had Brees number has only got to help the offense learn how to be more versatile against those types of fronts.

Lol at how much homers are now slurping Ryan's D.

Like I said in the draft thread, fans, which we all are, can convince themselves of anything when they're stuck with it.

I don't think there's any doubt it'll utilize personnel better than the last scheme..but whether it works or not is yet to be seen, and if we're going on track records it probably won't.

There is a difference between convincing ourselves of nonsense and being optimistic about the change. No one thinks you're fricking cool by coming in here and being that guy who says "lol look at all the dumb homers". It's saints talk so give the "look at how objective I am" shtick a rest.

While he probably will, I doubt we know that as of now. Whats the indicator? These guys aren't practicing yet.
