A detailed look at how the New Orleans Saints scouted safety Kenny Vaccaro

LINK

quote:

"I remember Josh telling me one of the things that stood out with Vaccaro that night was how well he knew personnel," Pace said. "He reviewed every single player in the draft, their strengths and weaknesses, which was impressive to know. His competition, the guys he played against, what exactly they did good or bad. It was like a scout talking."

The Saints were further impressed the next day to learn that Vaccaro woke up early and made sure to squeeze in a workout before heading out to the practice facility.

"That stands out," Pace said. "Because some guys don't do that. That takes discipline.

"One thing that sucks with those visits is those guys are in great shape for the combine, right? Then they fly from city to city and every night they're wined and dined. You're not sleeping a lot. You get these late dinners.

"So if you wake up early and get a workout at the hotel, that tells you something right there."

It's a long read by nola.com standards. It's not the best written article I've read (it seems to randomly change topic at times), but some interesting tibits about the scouting process in there.

Really good read. I wish they would do something like this at least once a week (maybe not this lengthy), to hold us over in the slow part of the season.

quote:

In the end, as Payton said on the night of the draft, the Saints wound up with a "cloud" of four players that they both liked and expected to possibly be available with their pick. Two of them were gone, and two of them remained when the Saints selected Vaccaro - though neither Payton, Reiprish nor Pace offered any specifics on how those players were graded or ranked. One player who was not in that four-man cloud was Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, which seemed to disappoint a lot of Saints fans who coveted the college star when he was still available at No. 15.

Any guesses on who the other player is that was still available? If I had to guess, I'd say Olgetree or Rhodes.

I definitely wanted Jones over Vaccaro, but the more time that passes, the happier with the pick I am. One of the reason I, and probably others, weren't as big on Vaccaro was he didn't have all of the flashy numbers, or plays for a safety, but the quote from Reprish provides a good explanation for that.

quote:

"There's a lot of times Jarvis Jones was put in a position to make the play, whereas Vaccaro was put in a position that didn't necessarily allow him to make the play," Reiprish said.

After watching more and more of him at Texas, it's obvious him and Okafor were the only two guys with talent on their defense, which forced them to use Vaccaro in ways that didn't necessarily make the flashy plays or stats.

I am getting happier and happier with the pick up time goes by because obviously Ryan and Payton felt comfortable with the linebackers we have. If that turns out to be true, safety was the next best thing.

you're a huge homer like the rest of us and you don't have a choice now but to like him because he's a saint.

But a lot of people here already determined 5 seconds after he was picked that he was Jonathan Sullivan 2.0.

That's just silly. He's not nearly as fat.

I never disliked the kid, but I really wanted Jones. I still do. However safety was one of our biggest weaknesses. Getting Chase Thomas after the draft help to alleviate some of my disappointment.

Exactly. As much as I wanted Jarvis- Adding the top rated safety while having the worst two rated safeties in the league > adding another young, and inexperienced OLB to an already big group of young, inexperienced OLBs.

Don't sleep on Reddick either. I expect both to make the final 53

Yeah, but he's more of an inside linebacker, although he's versatile enough to rush form the outside.

@Chad I like Rufus as a prospect, but I'm not expecting much of anything from him this year.

That's awesome. I remember Corey Chavious being one of those guys who loved film and breaking down the draft and it made him a great CB for a long time seeing guys tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. Good to hear.

He's a saint. I'm on his bandwagon until he's not. Like most other saints that have been on this team I've hung in till the bitter end with few exceptions. I'm looking at you Jason David, and Aaron Brooks. I had a feeling we would pass on Jones regardless before the draft. There were just too many teams that didn't want to touch him for it not to smell fishy. `Very nice article it just puts me more in his corner. Go Vaccaro

That seems to be the case. LIke a lot of people I thought they were going to draft Jones, but I've got to say I think Vacarro was the safer pick and was also a position of need. And considering that we didn't have a #2 this year (frick you Roger Godell. May a perverted holy man impregnante your only sister ), we couldn't afford to come away empted handed in the first round.
