Don't really remember the Saban hiring as much as the Miles cause LSU wasn't as huge back then.

But I do remember the Miles hire. And I thought, as I didn't really know anything about Okie. St. but looking into it I wondered why we got a guy who didn't really have a great coaching record.

Nowadays, I'm kind of indifferent to the hiring, yeah, we've had good seasons. But damn he's a bonehead sometimes.

So, what were your thoughts on the hiring of Saban vs. the hiring of Miles?

ETA: Yeah, we've never had this thread before.

Considering he came back here and led us to Omaha in his second season, i'd say very strong hire.

I think the hiring of Saban was average at best considering none of his assistants came with him. Once he started putting the staff together I think the interest went up because Saban was smart enough to surround himself with a lot of southern ties which was key.

Miles was not seen as an adequate replacement but again Miles has done a good job of surrounding himself with capable assistants. Even Crowton was good for that 2007 offense. The co def coord was the only negative. I think most LSU fans thought LSU would get a better name and higher profile guy but as late in the game as it was they were lucky to get a sitting head coach. I think they made the right decision in not promoting from within and that was made early on in the process. Saban didn't do LSU any favors in waiting so long but that's how the NFL works.

I'm still not sure how having an 80% winning percentage (which equals the all-time greats in the history of college football) during the greatest era in SEC football history with some of the most aggressive OOC scheduling we've ever had equates to anything other than an absolute slam-bang home run hire.

Th competition for Inane and Irrelevant Thread of the Year is usually hotly contested, with many worthy entries. We may, however, have a preemptive winner.

I'm torn.

One the one hand, Smoke had the highest conference winning percentage of any SEC coach while he was here.

On the other hand, I always had my suspicions that he wasn't capable of managing such a high profile program, and my suspicions were confirmed when the talent started to dry up.

I'd rather be remembered for something rather than not be remembered at all.

Wasnt happy. But again Saban had his fair share of haters until now.

On reality, saban cost us 2 bcs championships. idnt revruit worth shite before he left, leaving the oline without quality depth, which is why 08 happened and we had 3 dlinemen playing oline.

Saban wasnt the best coach at LSU. Lost games we had no business losing. Id say the combo of him and bama is why hes so good. Bama already had the history, gets special treatment from sec offices and is smack in the middle if sec country. Meaning distance is not a factor fir any kid living in the south.

Did I mention LSU consistently has one if the 3 hardest schedules in the sec, while bama has consistently had the easiest?

Honestly the Saban hire was the 2nd best move LSU has ever made (behind Skip). He took our program from the ashes and layed the foundation for us to become a perennial power. A+ hire.

Miles is great but I think his team's slightly underachieve and we play up to our opponents. Case in point; Towson outplays us in tiger stadium for 3 quarters then we turn around in the exact same venue and outplay the #1 team in the nation and eventual national champions for 4 quarters. I hope for Mile's sake that we get Bama in the playoff format, because if not his legacy won't be the '07 championship, it'll be the beating in '11. With that being said I think he'll go down as our greatest coach ever and have 3 championships before his time is done. A hire.
