The law says he can't hack the machine. Explain to me how he did anything to tamper with the machine's security. The employee changing the settings is icing on the cake, it's just a way to allow the machine to accept higher bets.

What does this mean? I think about 3 weeks after Hollywood took over was when that machine started acting normal.

Sounds like the casino had a faulty machine and this guy took advantage of it.

If an ATM is faulty and you knowingly keep taking money out should you get to walk away with the money ?

This analogy is so bad it threatens the continued existence of analogies.

You playing the 100 -- you had found its "wheelhouse" where it was paying within that range and always keeping you "healthy" (with credits). Some of the old "Elvis" machines were the same way.

re: Two men arrested for hacking a video poker machine and winning $1 million

FWIW I did have an ATM one time spit out a crap load of 20s (bills were sticky) when I was just getting 40 dollars out. I did walk into the bank right after and give them the extra money. They thanked me and gave me some bank coffee mug package they had.

The law they are attempting to prosecute him under doesn't appear to fit and I don't see how they could sustain a conviction.

This is more akin to card counting. It is frowned upon and not allowed by casinos, but isn't illegal. They don't have to allow this guy to play if they suspect he has an advantage, but I don't think they will be able to successfully prosecute him either.

you'd have to be able to prove they KNEW it was a faulty program section in the logic.

if they didnt program the machine or have access to the code....nearly impossible.

re: Two men arrested for hacking a video poker machine and winning $1 million

quote:

Kane began by selecting a game, like Triple Double Bonus Poker, and playing it at the lowest denomination the machine allows, like the $1.00 level. He kept playing, until he won a high payout, like the $820 at the Silverton.

Then he’d immediately switch to a different game variation, like straight “Draw Poker.” He’d play Draw Poker until he scored a win of any amount at all. The point of this play was to get the machine to offer a “double-up”, which lets the player put his winnings up to simple high-card-wins draw. Through whatever twist of code caused the bug, the appearance of the double-up invitation was critical. Machines that didn’t have the option enabled were immune.

At that point Kane would put more cash, or a voucher, into the machine, then exit the Draw Poker game and switch the denomination to the game maximum — $10 in the Silverton game.

Now when Kane returned to Triple Double Bonus Poker, he’d find his previous $820 win was still showing. He could press the cash-out button from this screen, and the machine would re-award the jackpot. Better yet, it would re-calculate the win at the new denomination level, giving him a hand-payout of $8,200

He literally played millions of dollars worth of Video Poker before he accidentally figured out this sequence. Props to him.

Not only that, with a good attorney, he is entitled to his winnings and he can rape them for the arrest and also the harassment and defamation of character, ect. I can't see how the casino can win this one, finally.

Exactly. The bigger concern here is if they somehow manage to make the charges stick, Vegas just set a precedent that they are not liable for shitty oversight. Any big win will have to go through a mile of red tape on the slight chance the casino can recoup.

A judge would have to be insane or on the take to do this.

You wouldn't. I was countering his ATM analogy with something that actually made sense.

re: Two men arrested for hacking a video poker machine and winning $1 million

quote:

I had found a slot machine one time that had to be broken. Paid out way too much way too often. This was at Casino Rouge right before they became Hollywood. I would go once a week put in 40 dollars and it was rare that I didnt cash out within 30 min for 400+ Won 1000+ 2x on it in a month. Felt like they were watching me at one point. Sometimes I would literally walk in put in a 20 and walk out 5 min later like it was an ATM. When they switched to Hollywood they must have done something to it as the machine stopped hitting and I stopped going to that casino. It was so bad I showed my boss one time the slot I was talking about and we each put in 20 and cashed out 800 to split min later.

Either insane luck or I had found an ultra loose slot I figured.

Last month I was at Coushatta in Kinder for a weekend. I was playing this Dean Martin slot and next to me, this slot, Queen's Knight, kept paying off. I mean over and over and over. The woman wouldn't leave so I left and went back later when it was open. Same thing happened to me. Kept winning.

Being the negative person I am, and thinking this can't keep up, after I won about $400, I cashed out and moved back over to Dean Martin. Lady sits down at that machine and same thing. Win Win Win.

I left to play poker and the next day I go back and there's a man and his wife at that same machine, Queen's Knight. They kept winning and never left the damn machine. He'd go cash out the ticket and she'd save the machine till he came back (don't know why he kept going cash out the tickets. Maybe he was scared the casino would take them back).

This went on for hours and I never could get back to that damn machine.

I forgot about this until I read your post. I'm sure by now they've corrected whatever the problem was but I may take a trip back this week and check it out.

Did he still have to win the hand?

Sounds like the glitch was enabling the double up option which he still had to win.

Are they going to refund every person who lost money on the glitched machine? No, then no they don't get their money.

Unless I am reading the OP wrong, they still had to win.
