He's from St. Croix. Pretty sure that'd make him Caribbean-American.

They said this was the 1st time in 101 yrs that a black jockey competed in the Kentucky derby. Back then he was the one being whipped not the horse.

The Emancipation Proclamation. January 1, 1863, but slavery basicaly ended when the South lost in 1865. The 1st run for the roses was in 1875. So I doubt this man was getting whipped. Krigger was the second black jockey in the last 92 years to ride in the Run for the Roses.

13 of the 15 riders in the first Kentucky Derby were African-Americans. In the years following the Civil War, black jockeys dominated horse racing at a time when it was America’s most popular sport. African-American riders were the first black sports superstars in the United States, and they won 15 of the first 28 runnings of the Kentucky Derby.

Heard about that on ESPN radio. Blacks were good because certain ones on plantations handled and rode horses for their masters, they became good. Then later on down the road the white jockey's got mad and wanted the sport segregated, etc. Sad.

The white jockeys didn't just get mad so they stopped having black jockeys, the Jim crow laws happened.
