That team won't make the playoffs. Pau is no leader and he sucks in the system.

A Houston trade for Dwight makes sense, but taking Asik back would be a no for me. Morey will unload Asik in another deal. Pau as a C is much better than PF in MD's system.

Why not:

Dwight for Parsons/Lin/Jones and 2 1sts.

Flip Nash to Toronto for Lowry and Landry Fields (btw Colangelo has to be the worst GM in the league now that Kahn is no more, right?)

I don't know how this sets them up long term, but they have young assets they can flip in S/T and guys that fit D'Antoni's system (if he's the asnwer).

Lin/Lowry
Fields/Meeks (Kobe)
Parsons/???
Clark/Jones
Pau/Hill

1. They could trade Nash to Toronto anytime they want. Toronto would eat that contract in a second. The Lakers just have to find the right pieces to take back in exchange (Ross? Jonas?). But they could drop some payroll there.

Simmons being Simmons. Toronto isn't going to just eat shite to for 2 years of a washed up Canadian.

quote:

2. Amnesty MWP. It's all about saving money and gaining some space. But they said that would be about 20 million is savings (salary + penalties).

He only makes like $7.5. $20M in savings is quite an exaggeration. Simmons is attaching an inordinate amount of their taxes to his salary.

quote:

3. S&T Howard. They all said he wasn't a fit and would leave anyway. Houston was the main partner they brought up (teaming Howard with Harden). The package coming back (Asik and Parsons) wasn't the greatest, but they'd get some value. If the Hawks package was offered (Horford and Jenkins). I'm sure they'd jump on that.

They aren't getting Asik and Parsons for a S&T of an UNRESTRICTED free agent unless Houston is looking to shed them.

quote:

4. Keep Pau. He's Kobe's buddy and will keep the team relevant while Kobe gets healthy. If Kobe can come back in Feb and the team is somewhat close to playoff contention. It'll all be a success.

Kobe and Pau alone make $50M next year, or the majority of the salary cap. Rebuild fails.

If they were to do all of that shedding with nothing in return, they're already at $62M (over the cap).

Also, I would have to look into the new CBA rules to see if some of these are even possible. Can they even do a S&T with Howard considering how far over the cap they are? I'm pretty sure they cannot.

They can do a S&T. They can't receive the player being signed if too far over.

The tax savings depends on the actual salary situation, but that is not an exaggeration if the total salary is something like $90m. This is because the tax is progressive, and when you amnesty someone, that means you save money at the highest, not lowest, marginal rates.

In the $90m's, you pay more than $3:$1.

Their rebuild is not for next season, though they can pretend it is. They have good reason to be horrible, and relatively clean books for 2014-2015, and that's when the repeater tax would kick in, as well. They should make all their plans with respect to that season and beyond. Next season would be in service to the following one.

Because he is an unrestricted free agent. Houston would be absolute morons to give up that much for him.

This is another "Lakers' Best Case Scenario" trade. Colangelo would be dumber than Isaiah Thomas if he made that move.

It definitely improves their lot, but these trades would make it look like Morey and Colangelo are colluding with the Lakers.

I'm pretty sure Lowry left in part because he and McHale didn't get along.

He may not be in place much longer. The Raptors just got a new President who previously was the President of the group that owns the Staples Center and is a minority owner of the Lakers. He has grand visions of making Toronto the Lakers East so I wouldn't be surprised if Colangelo gets fired soon. Even if he stays for another year he's likely to get vetoed on stupid trades.

Okay, they can do a S&T, but they won't get Parsons, Asik. 2 firsts, and a second. That's absurd. Even Parsons/Lin/Jones and 2 firsts is absurd. Maybe Parsons and a protected first, but not much more.

Okay, it saves them taxes, but it doesn't really give them any flexibility.

They almost need to blow it up completely. Suck hard next year with Kobe out, then come back flexible. Simmons is being unrealistic.

You're welcome, sweetie.

I never agreed with that `plan' that was presented, for what it was worth; just clearing up some things.

I said farther above essentially what you said just above about them having to really reset to make things work.

People should not underestimate the tax pressure on this team.

I'd amnesty Pau unless someone took him for a draft pick, anywhere 1-60.

The Lakers are quite possibly done as a Super Power. They'll have cap space in 2014 and agents will certainly steer their clients towards LA, but the Big Fish like LeBron and Melo are staying put. The Lakers will end up getting someone like Rudy Gay or Zach Randolph. Honestly their best bet is to suck hard next year and win the Lottery. If they don't make the playoffs I wouldn't be surprised to see the ping pong balls bounce their way, even from the 14th spot. The League needs LA to be a top team because everyone is depending on them having a big tax bill and sharing their big TV deal.

I totally agree. My main issue is with Big Market Bill Simmons making rainbows appear in fart clouds for the Lakers.

On a side note: How the hell does Simmons justify being a Celtics homer while brochamping for the Lakers and Clippers endlessly? I almost get the impression that he's just a professional front runner.

Don't want to start a new thread.... but will we even go hard at getting CP3 to return?

I'm not sure if they will publicly, but I'm pretty sure they'll at least see if it's an option. I think Dell and Monty have Paul's respect enough that he'd be fairly upfront, but some of his handlers meddle way too much.

Just spitballing off of bmark's post. Dony think much of it is realistic, but the possibilities, like 42 said, are fascinating

quote:

Dwight for Parsons/Lin/Jones and 2 1sts.

Because he is an unrestricted free agent. Houston would be absolute morons to give up that much for him.

Say they do S/T. Houston has no use for Lin right now- they lose his $8mil/year contract. Parsons is a loss, but one you do for Dwight. Jones and 1sts are just assets that you move to get Dwight. They can then flip Asik to a team that misses out on or doesnt want to pay Pekovic.

Turning Lin/Parsons/rookie deals into Dwight Howard is a no brainer. Could they just sign him outright? Of course, but trades will be trickier once they are capped out

quote:

Colangelo would be dumber than Isaiah Thomas if he made that move.

Well he did say Gay will probably get an extensiom because of his star power.

They take Nash's corpse but they get rid of head case Lowry and Landry Fields terrible contract. For a hometown hero on the retirement tour, that's not awful.

edit- put another way- nash for 2 years at $18million total or fields for 3 at the same price?

An interesting sub plot McNamara has mentioned is would the Clippers make an offer the Pelicans can't refuse to get out of the CP3 sweepstakes. Basically giving us Bledsoe cheap, something like Vasquez for Bledsoe and Butler. Taking on Butler takes up enough cap space to put us out of the running for CP3 and gives the Clippers a little flexibility to make some moves to keep CP3.

That dude is unnaturally obsessed with Bledsoe.

Thought the most recent podcast was very good throughout.

Did I miss the one with Lowe?

Vasquez and CP on the same team? That would be interesting. I could see them "having dinner" often.

A number of people are.

And, IMHO, an "offer we can't refuse" for Bledsoe would be him and Butler for Roberts, not Vasquez.

It would be a total salary dump by the Clip Show for two trade exceptions as well as getting another backup point who would be an understudy to Paul.
