Tulane Stadium Experience

Who here has been to Tulane Stadium?
What was the capacity?
Was it loud in comparison to Tiger Stadium?
What was the ratio of Tulane fans compared to LSU fans when those teams squared off?
(Non-LSU question but what the hell) Who saw the Dempsey 63 yd FG?

Capacity was just over 80,000. Largest attendance was over 86,000 for the 1973 LSU-Tulane game.
Approx. 300,000 claim to have been there for Dempsey's kick.

I may have been the last football game played there. IIRC, it was a jesuit/rummel game.
by the time it was torn down/no longer used, you couldn't even see the lines on the turf.

I was at a Saints-Philadelphia Eagles game, way back in the day before silent snap counts etc., where a bad call went against the Saints, and it got so loud in there, the QB couldn't hear, and it was an NFL record for delaying a game because of crowd noise. Something like 24 minutes.
The whole upper deck was made of metal. Everyone would start stomping their feet, and this rumbling roar would start. Got pretty loud.

The Dempsy Kick
Was a sunny, warm Sunday afternoon. JD Roberts had just been called up as HC from the Saints "farm" team. Saints had played a pretty good game, but were short on the scoreboard with seconds remaining
Field goal team is coming on the field and their was a buzz of "What! Are you kidding?" from all in the stands. Most had consumed a fair share of the beer man's Dixie draft. Remember turning to the guy that was with me saying, "They say he hits kicks from 65 & 70 in practice", but I doubt anyone thought their was a prayer from 63 yards.
As the team came to the line of scrimmage, the stadium went absolutely silent. Silent! I remember hearing Gino Scarpatti's hut", hearing the ball hit his hands & the impact of Dempsy's foot on the ball. Imagine the sound of 60K plus taking a deep breath.
Alex Karras was laughing from his defensive position - no rush - the deep back just went to his knees and watched the ball go buy.
It took what seemed like a long time for the ball to get to the goalpost, but as it went threw, the silence turned to pandimonium!
Leaving the stadium about 20 minutes later, that d-back was still on his knees at about the 25 yard line just shaking his head.
Great day in Saints history.

1. Largest crowd ever for a football game in the South - November, 1973 (TU 14 LSU 0) - 85,011
Capacity was around 83,000. Largest crowd in Tulane Stadium for a Saints game was 83,088 vs the Dallas Cowboys in Sept. of 1971.
2. No. The loudest I ever heard it was that Saints-Dallas game in 1971 my Dad took me to.
I would imagine it was loud for some of the Super Bowls held there and probably a few LSU-Tulane games.
3. Ratio of Tulane/LSU fans in Tulane Stadium for average year games (When one or both teams were crappy - usually TU :) about 30/70 or 25/75
Ratio for big Tulane/LSU games in Tulane Stadium like 1972 and 1973 - about 40/60
4. My Dad and I were walking down the ramp after Errol Mann kicked a short FG to give the Lions a 17-16 lead with about 20 seconds left.
We missed the kickoff return, Kilmer's sideline pass to Al Dodd to the Saints 45, and of course THE KICK. But we heard it and went rushing up to an open section to see Dempsey getting mobbed and the remaining fans going absolutely berserk !
Watched the replay over and over and over on Channel 4 sports than night with Jim Barry...

stadium had potential if it was taken care of over the years....take out that old metal upper deck and just keep the lower bowl in tact. Would have been perfect for the greenies

Looking at the picture of the stadium, the original East and West sides as well as the South were concrete...the upper deck and North end were made of steel....
an earlier poster is correct, if the stadium were maintained and all the steel taken out, what's left would be a decent sized college football stadium....
as far as parking was concerned, a LOT of people took public transit...either the streetcar from St. Charles or the Feret St Bus....I can remember 15-20 buses waiting outside the stadium for spectators and they'd also lay on extra streetcars...

We used to park at a friend's house on Willow but getting there on narrow, congested streets was always a challenge. There were some lots on Claiborne but not many. I was there in '73 for LSU/Tulane and my grandfather was on the Saints medical staff under JD Roberts so we had season tickets. Missed the Lions game, unfortunately. I played football on that awful rug in high school. You always had to be aware of the tears in the turf otherwise you could suffer a nasty spill.

I recall going to Saints games there as a kid and being afraid the damned thing would come down when the crowd started stomping feet. As a kid, it seemed the whole stadium shook.
