Bear with me. Is it possible the FO thinks we have good pass rushers already?

Before the draft, I was thinking that it was somewhat likely that we wouldn't draft a pass rusher.

My thinking was that perhaps we already have pass rush talent on the team.
I know, I know, you can always use more pass rushers.
Among 4-3 DE's who played in 25% of snaps or more in 2012, Junior Galette ranked 19th of 62 by PFF, right behind Mario Williams and Julius Peppers.
In terms of pass rush alone, he ranked 14th...ahead of the likes of Cliff Avril, Osi, and Irvin.

Of 34 3-4 OLB's, Victor Butler ranked 7th overall in 2012.
His pass rush puts him at 9th.

I don't think Wilson played enough snaps to get a PFF ranking, but we saw that he made impacts on the field.

On the other hand, our two safeties were ranked 87th and 88th out 88 safeties overall.
They suck so hard its beyond belief.

Maybe we just went for the bigger need/gap.
I dunno; I'm not sure how I feel yet.

Also, everyone is forgetting about A. Hicks. He's is going to be a monster at DT.

I've only been saying this for a couple of weeks. We have speed rushers off the edge and a good rotation of linemen.

What we lack at OLB is someone with experience who can cover. You were not getting that in the draft.

More and more I'm thinking some other guys we haven't talked about(Chamberlain, Herring, Hawthorne, and maybe even Harper if Vacarro plays SS) could play OLB situationally.

I think our defense will improve pretty significantly switching to a 3-4 scheme

I completely agree. Between the move to 3-4 to get our better players on the field(Wilson and Galette) and our worse players off the field(Shanle, Herring, other crappy LB) and fitting some players better(Jordan, Bunkley, Hicks), and going back to an attacking man D ala GW which fits our secondary players, I think we see a great improvement, at least into the 18-24 range.

Oh come on red, you really feel that way? I respect your opinion, but honest question, did you watch Texas last year? I am asking to understand if you are looking at snippets from draft people (b/c you will hear only positive things and he does test well) or if you actually saw him yourself?

He was being touted at the beginning of last season (so I made a point to note his play). I saw him play a lot and I just disagree with this pick, this high, especially with the way the game is played and the other needs we have (so, just to clarify, I don't think he "cannot play AT ALL", but that there are a lot of difficulties with taking the pill of this pick) and I don't think he is as good as advertised.

I saw him play and here is a simple synopsis: good in run support, but lacks great cover ability, not impressed with his football IQ (and the whole Texas D was atrocious) and seemed to disappear in spots when he should have shinned.

I hope he can help and contribute. With all that said and the majority of people not liking this pick, you really think those that don't like the pick are

???

Like I said, I respect your opinions and have no issue with you, but there were/ are a lot of intelligent reasoning behind not wanting him at that spot (out of all the safeties, I wanted Ellam FWIW). I just wanted to understand your reasoning.

I thought you'd be ecstatic that we didn't draft an LSU player.

I think this is part of it, and they have their eyes on someone they feel they can get in the 3rd or 4th round, or even later on.

I would love(d) Reid or Minter, or even Faulk later on.

I have nothing against drafting LSU players...I love LSU. I just don't think Mingo was worth the draft spot and Mathieu is an immature idiot.

You're getting too sensitive about that.

Just a friendly jab.

Could be. Or like I said in another thread- it isn't like we passed on multiple pass rushers at 15. We passed on one guy, Jarvis Jones. The FO obviously wasn't sold on him whether it was medical, or his poor workout skills. We didn't pass on the position, we passed on one person.

I've watched a ton of him play as well. And he's pretty much known for his coverage ability as a safety. His only true knock is his inability to be that premier, turnover causing, disruptive safety that you would want in a first round pick. Aka, a player that was not in this draft.

The way the game is played?

Other needs we have?

Vacarro is a matchup dream as a defensive coach. A guy that can play the run, and match up against the slot, and can cover the field. We had the two worst safeties in the NFL last year, and we drafted the best safety in the draft.

Matt Elam is 5'10, and a hot head. The guy caused about as many penalties as he did big plays. He's flashy in college because of his small size, and big hits, but he's going to be a liability in many ways on the pro level. You aren't putting Matt Elam on a Tony Gonzales for instance, lol.

THAT'S who you liked better? Who did you think was there for our pick that made so much more sense?

Reminders, we were last against the rush, and second to last against the pass. We drafted a guy that can play the run, and can cover. I feel like I'm in an alternate universe reading so much of this.(not just you AnotherR, I respect your opinion, just disagree).

Why didn't we change to the 3-4 last year if we have so much 3-4 type talent?

Vaccaro played all 4 years of college football with a lot of playing time as a freshman.

Don't act all surprised if people have seen him play and are able to form an opinion on him.

this.

we get it, you armchair GM's only have time for SEC football and therefore you know next to nothing about other players not named manti te'o.

also, ryan's particular 3-4 scheme seems to require at least a good secondary to prosper. dallas had to upgrade last year when he arrived, and we are doing the same this year.

people also conveniently forget the absolute chaos last year due to the suspensions. we will be hungrier, more focused, coached better, and will show improvement in every aspect of the game. it takes a complete team effort to win in the league and we will have a better team, starting with Vaccaro. he's a guy with a lot of talent, experience, and instincts that will upgrade the worst unit of our defense. so instead of acting like a pussy and crying on the internet because the saints didn't draft your guy, why don't you do your homework on the guy we did draft and figure out how and why he'll be an immediate improvement to our secondary (again, worst unit of the defense); i promise, it's not that difficult to see.
