The skill position thread made me decide to look at the offense and defense under the Payton era. I bring you this out of boredom.

On a serious note, this really shows what kind of shite show last season was. The absence of Payton had a major effect on the defense, mainly because the play calling was such hit or miss offensively. Yes, stats show the offense was great, but It wasn't the usual fluidness that kept the defense off the field, it was more spurts of big plays.
This also makes me more confident this coming season, because I believe Rob Ryan is a lot like Gregg Williams, who was clearly the most successful coordinator of the Payton era. Not only is he a player's coach, but his scheme will attack offenses and fit the personell similarly to Williams'. They will allow yards and frustrate us, but will make enough plays to suffice. That's all an offense of this caliber needs. A middle of the pack defense, which is what we had under Williams, translates to a lot of wins with a high caliber offense.
After all, the team with the most points at the end of a game is what matters, and 28.2 is more than 22.7 as far as I'm concerned. Any kind of upgrade of the defense from last year, especially one that fits the personell, and I like our odds of being a serious contender in the NFC again.
And, frick the Falcons.

That 2010 defense is so underrated on account of everyone (especially Harper) pooning out in the playoffs.

Yep, people act like we have been the worst defense of all time for years. Under Williams, the defense wasn't bad, and that's using a lot of the personell we currently have. The personell fits an attacking scheme, and Ryan will at least attempt that.
The playoff loss with Seattle in 2010 can equally be blamed on the fact that the Saints had no running game to use. They had a dismantled backfield, forcing the offense to be one dimensional. No excuse for that fricking Marshawn Lynch run though.

Thanks for making me sick to my stomach because of 2010 again. I see Marshawn Lynch running as we speak 
But nothing was a heartbreaking as 2011. I have always hated the 49ers, but that game kills me.

well stated and I agree completely. We will be middle of the pack next year...especially if we run a little more and shorten the games a bit.

I think what the defensive numbers show is that Williams system was working and improving until he started going overboard in 2011. I think that's when he and Payton really fell out and he was trying to send an F You message. I honestly think to this day he purposely went overboard on that last drive in San Fran.
It gives me huge hope that what Ryan does will be an immediate improvement over last year and get us back to middle of the pack numbers, especially with our young talent finally able to see the field unlike they were under Williams and Spags.

yeah, I'm with you on the yards given up point. If we happened to give up a lot and still win, I could care less.
But a lot of fans are obsessed with those style points... hate to say it but you know its true. A few years ago when we were 13-3, there was enough bitching on this board to make you think we finished 9-7.
Teams are going to get their yards in today's NFL (its just set up that way now) with the newer rules and all. So anyone under the delusion that thinks it doesn't work this way, please, just try and open your eyes. Even the best defenses still struggle in spurts. Look at how the 49ers defense got smoked pretty much that whole first half in the Super Bowl.
