Why do some people try to make you feel guilty about owning a purebred dog?

I’ve been getting this a lot from people lately. I own a golden retriever that I bought from a reputable breeder. When people ask me where I got her the moment the word breeder leaves my mouth the disgust is obvious and usually followed by something along the lines of “Breeders bad. Rescue good.” I’m tired of being chastised by holier-than-thou dog adopters for buying my dog.

Has anyone else encountered this?

We had a pure bred Yorkshire terrier, tournament grade dog. That thing was so inbred it had more problems than you could shake a stick at and it had attitude problems to boot. I couldn't have been happier when that little fricker croaked. Gods I hated that dog.

Getting a rescue is great.

But not for everyone. Some want from a breeder

Really either way is fine IMO. Just personal choice

There are plenty of purebred dogs at the pound. I really don't understand the need to buy a dog unless for hunting.

These are not my friends. If my friends have a problem with it they keep it to themselves. These are people at the dog park and other dog friendly places around town.

because shelters are full of good dogs that will be put down when no one adopts them, and people don't like that instead of adopting a golden retriever that would have most likely been just as good as your dog, you spent $1k to buy one from a puppy mill.

ETA: not my opinion on the matter, just stating how some people think

Because people always think their opinion is similar. It's the same with the people that disagree with people buying from non reputable breeders, or adopting from a shelter. You almost never see this though.

I have a GSP and I've never got that? Sounds like you have poor friends... You should do something about that

Because people put way more value on animals than need be.

Owning a purebred dog is better, especially for a family. I say this only because it is easier to know the temperament of the dog. If you know the breed, then you have a better idea of how it acts and what it needs.

It can be a much more difficult to understand a mixed dog.

That being said, I think a mixed pound puppy can be very ideal. My good friend has one, and she is an incredible animal.
