what type of grass do you have? If it is centipede, don't do it. Centipede needs very little fertilizer and many a centipede lawns have been destroyed by over fertilizing

Yea I have centipede.

Glad you said that.

So should I wait 8 weeks?

wait till next year, if you put out bonus s, it has fertilizer already in it, you are fine

next year I would recommend you staying away from the combo weed n feed all together, in early march treat for clover and weeds with a 2 4 d based weed killer such as weed free zone, then in mid April fertilize with a centipede variety specific fertilizer (the middle number will be 0)

I haven't weed'n'fed or fertilized my lawn in 3 years (yeah, I'm a slacker) but when I used Bonus S on my centipede lawn 4 years ago it worked wonders.

Grass turned a nice dark uniformed green and didn't have a single weed pop up at all that year.

I didn't use anything other than the Bonus S.

You need to listen to this.

I fertilized centipede real hard one spring. I had the greenest grass in town. It is currently pine straw.

What do you consider real hard?

40 pounds of Nitrogen per acre?

What kind of fertilizer?

yeah, you're only supposed to do it once in spring at a correct spreader setting and that's it. Another time in summer if you want.

I would never use Scott's bonus whatever. Over priced cheap fertilizer. Most of it is all nitrogen. That is not what lawns need.

You should only fertilize centipede in the spring, and stay away from a fertilizer high in nitrogen. Too much nitrogen makes the grass out-grow the roots and increases the chance for insect problems. I agree with the post above about using a weed killer and fertizer separately.

And never lime it. Unless your pH is below 5.

I think it means he over fertilized and it looked good for a short time, but is now dead.

The part he bolded about being careful to not overfertilize helped me crack the code.

I guess I should add that it's a brand new lawn that was put down when I closed on my house. I have a pretty robust sprinkler system that watered 5 days a week our first 2 weeks in the house, then every three days since then.

Just leave it alone, water as needed, but remember it is better to water heavy fewer times than lightly more often (this will force the roots to go deep versus spreading out just below the soil making them easier to burn)

also, raise your mower deck to allow the grass to be 1 1/2 inches (this will look too long for a while but will thicken up and be beautiful)
