So "42" was ok, but man there were some cheesy moments.

To the critic that said if it was released at the end of the year, it would be in the best picture race. Quit. Your job that is.
The guy who played Jackie was great. I was pretty impressed by him. I'm torn on Ford as Branch Rickkey, I'm not sure if that was a great performance or terrible.
If Indians skipper Ben Chapman was that big of a racist, then they nailed it. It was one of the more awkward scenes I've scene in a good while. I didn't see Django, but if it broke the record of how many times ni**er was said, 42 comes close to breaking it in one scene. I was gripping the ol chair pretty tight. Till he called him Bojangles then I chuckled. Sorry.
Some of the corny stuff that set the movie back:
**Semi spoilers I guess, but not too bad.
1) The little black kid was THE WORST. Instead of it ending (the scene) with Jackie doing the cliche toss the kid a ball as the train runs off, they have him chase the train and when it's off in the distance, he drops down and puts his ear to the track and yells "I can hear him! I can hear Jackie!" Huh? Okaaay. At this point I think the kids going to be a semi main character, but that was it for him. I was glad because he was a crappy kid actor.
2) Branch Rickey begs Max Gail to manage the team. Begs him like his life depends on it. He accepts the job. You're like ok, he's going to rally the troops the rest of the year. Then he introduces himself to the team and gives literally the worst speech in a sports movie of all time. Then he's barely a character. Why beg him to be the manager? They did some terrible character building.
3) the guy gets traded to Pittsburg and is mad so he's like "Pittsburg!? Pittsburg!? Pittsburg!!??" Well Brooklyn comes back to play Pittsburg. *jackie gets a hit* *camera shoots to dugout* * it's the Pittsburg guy* *pittsburg guy yells PITTSBURG!!"
It was in the Remember the Titans mold but much more accurate and not much comic relief. They got Pee Wee Reese's character wrong, he wasn't much fun. But Lucas Black was playing him so what do you expect.
Good movie though.

It's a feel good movie that most people won't take the chance of criticizing imo.

It was meh for me as well, around a 6.5/10
Pretty well acted I think but there were too many cliches for it to stand out as a great movie.
Lucas Black wasn't that bad this time around for me.

It was in the Remember the Titans mold but much more accurate
Example?
Or, how do you know one is more accurate than the other?
I read the Grantland review - it's not a sports movie, eh?
quote:
42 is a Hollywood movie about American racism in which the objects of that racism must summon their most noble selves.
quote:
This is the sort of movie in which Jackie and Rachel Robinson (Nicole Beharie) don't have to change. White America does. That's great for messaging, but hell on drama.
Seems like you agree about the characters and actors involved:
quote:
Most of the other black characters, like the sports reporter Wendell Smith (Andre Holland), have nothing to them but their goodness.
And there's an embarrassing couple of scenes with a precious tyke who, we're told during the closing credits, will grow up to be Ed Charles, who played for the Mets and Athletics. He explains plays for his mother, but is played by the kind of child actor who gives you cavities.

Just curious as to how so. I was wondering how much he'd be represented in the movie (part of the reason I was going to go since he's a Louisville guy).

I saw the trailer, and got a "Red Tails" vibe.
Pass.
Pass.

Both had racial tension as a main theme obviously.
It's clear to most that Jackie Robinson had it really tuff. Everywhere he went he was boo'd and called a nig*er his rookie season. But they didn't show it to an extreme where you were like "ok this is ridiculous" except with the Indians and Ben Chapman. Chapman was a racist, that was well known. He was involved in multiple fights in his career bc of it. He called people Jews and did nazi salutes to them. They even pegged that. A reported asked him (in the movie) something like "well they say you're a racist" and he answers "it was probably written by a Jew. So they took some time with the little things.
Every shot of Jackie wasn't him blasting one out of the park. But they showed that he deserved to be in the bigs and Rickey wanted him there.
Remember the Titans made it seem that they were the only team in the state to have blacks and whites play together. That was a HUGE part of the story, I guess the main part. Them coming together as a team despite racial hatred. ALMOST EVERYBODY IN THE STATE HAD BLACKS ON THEIR TEAM. So in other words, they were just like everybody else, except they had a black coach, and the movie was super misleading.
Hence the much more accurate statement.

Eh, I would say so. But a lot of black people are going to hate white people after seeing this.

Ok, I know damn well my views often don't represent the majority of black people, but I have NEVER had that feeling after seeing any movie that focuses on racial themes.
If anything, movies like that make me appreciate how far we've come as a nation and recognize how far there is to go. But I'm usually damn thankful to be living in THIS particular time window more than anything. Never reacted with hate.
Again, JMHO, though. Looking forward to seeing 42 in the future.

I hear ya.
I was meaning that in semi jest but also white people aren't completely redeeming in this.

Wasn't my intention to call you out or anything, by the way.
Just whenever a movie like this comes out it gives me pause. I typically have a LOT to think about coming out of a film like that, but it's never been negative for me.

I actually was coming back to edit my post. White people needing to be redeemed in some way and some black folks hating some white folks is not what I took away from the movie.

My little brother has a Jackie Robinson scholarship to go to A&M, and he got to see an advance screening of the film. He came away extremely impressed, so I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Right...and you hope that a film would show casual pervasiveness or silent acquiescence...instead of one or two villains who are racist in everything they do on screen...screaming caricatures (where there apparent goal in life/on screen is to be racists and do racist things)...(I think that's worse in movies because it negates everything to a "few" bad seeds instead of society at that time in general.
I was wondering about the Remember the Titans because I thought that movie was hokey regardless of the story - true or not.
The problem with these movies is nobody is ever presented as a real person (as us humans are - complicated) - these movies give us cardboard cut-outs...white hat/black hat...but I guess in a movie about Jackie Robinson, his story and career and legend as a baseball player has simply become reduced to black and white and that singularly theme...and how we like to tidy that story up in a nice package to sell.

No I didn't mean it was just one character being racist. There was just one guy much worse than the other. Every stadium he went to he was bombarded, people on the street, and teammates all hit him with it.

I guess you could look at this in just a black in white way but there's more to it than that. It can strike up your emotions depending on the type of person you are.
