honestly, in hindsight, he tears his achilles and STILL walks to the bench on the timeout, walks to the FT line, nails 2 fts, and walks to the locker room on his own weight. that in itself is crazy

Bummed about Kobe. League is less fun than it was 3 hours ago. Hope he comes back 100%. PS: no way Phil Jackson plays him 47 mins a night.

That sounds about right. Probably looking at least a six month recovery period.

Is it normal to be able to hobble off the court on your own after a completely torn achilles?

How about frick you? Who wouldn't fall on their own if they tore an Achilles?

How about reading comprehension? I was referring the the BS foul call on that play, much like a lot of the BS calls he gets. Just because a guy injures himself and falls doesn't mean he was fouled.

The earliest he could return to the Lakers would be for the 2014-2015 season, when he would be a free agent.

Does that make sense to anyone? Its kinda late and I could be rambling
Right. That's the situation I'm talking about. What are YOU talking about? lol. I mean you're right that they can't amnesty him and re-sign him the same off-season. But if they wait to re-sign him when his contract expires after 13-14 (the season he could miss anyway), then it's probably okay.

Once they cut those ties, any team under the salary cap conduct a silent bid for any amount up to the amount they are under the cap, with the highest bid getting him on their roster for the 2013-2014 season.

Doing this would also take away the Lakers Bird rights on him making it hard to re-sign him unless they used the mid-level exception and I doubt Kobe is going to do that.

They will keep him on the roster unless he chooses to retire (which is unlikely), then I believe he could come back after next year and the Lakers would have his rights still.

Achilles Heel

quote:

league fall into this age band, but players older than 33 are still underrepresented.) Of the 11 players I found with ruptured Achilles tendons in the last two decades, four (including Isiah Thomas, who retired at 32 following a ruptured Achilles) never played in the NBA again. Just four returned to play at the same level by my estimation, though Dominique Wilkins' successful comeback is notable. Wilkins made two All-Star teams after a ruptured Achilles suffered at 32 and played until age 39.

They only have 50+ million in cap space that season.

30+ after they re-sign Dwight this off-season.

The sad thing is D'Antoni is going to take a lot of crap for this. For one thing, I'm guessing that Kobe didn't want to come out of games. For another NO ONE knows if playing a lot of minutes had ANYTHING to do with the injury. Dan Marino ruptured his Achilles while back peddling for a pass. Two of my buddies tore theirs while playing softball. Unfortunately, that's all we'll hear about from the talking heads over the next week.

You watch the Lakers more than any of us....don't you think they had to for us to have any shot at the playoffs?

One last thing: assuming Kobe is out for entire '13-'14 season, insurance normally covers 80% of injured player's salary. Kobe due $30.4M.
Interesting twist to the Laker financial plot. Wouldn't save them any tax money, but could save them about like $24m.

Resting keeps you fresher during games, which generally leads to better overall play. Maybe he takes a few less defensive plays off instead of using them to pace himself. Plus now he misses the last 2 games of the season. Henry Abbot article about how heavy minutes can be counter productive.
