How Was Barkley So Successful?

I'm reading his 1st book and never realized how much the odds were stacked against him. He was 6'4" (basically the height of Dwayne Wade) playing against giants. He even played center in college. Not only that, but he constantly averaged double digit rebounds. As a kid, I always thought he was 6'8" with the way he played.

Rebounding is an effort stat.

Long arse arms, strong and fast.

And a wide butt that he used to his advantage.

If you ever get the chance to see him up close, you'll understand. Dude is massive. Not just talking about bulk. He has gigantic hands, and log arms. Mix that with great ability, and tremendous hops.

quote:Dwyane's actually like 6'2. The 6'4 measurement is with shoes on. So Barkley's a bit taller. But he just knew how to use his body to create space. He was also a great athlete.

He averaged 28 in Philly as a PF. No way would a tweener like him get drafted as high as 5 in the draft today. I at the story about how Philly said they were going to draft him but didn't have enough money to pay him. He decided to eat everything in sight and gained 20lbs in a weekend to discourage them.

Even though he is a hall of famer and was named one of the 50 greatest nba players on all time, I still feel he doesn't get the recognization that he should due to him playing in the same era as Jordan, Magic, and Bird.
I mean he led the league in offensive rebounds three different times...at 6'5

I was a huge fan of his when I lived in Houston. He pulled down 33 rebounds in his first game with the Rockets.

Long arms, freakishly strong, and explosive hops.

He (like Rodman) had a knack for positioning himself and then outworking others for rebounds. Great student of the game.

Go watch highlights of him
He used to be skinny and really Athletic and very powerful

Well, I dunno about THAT

he was 6'6, not 6'4. Still, impressive as hell to lead the league in rebounding.

I attribute my hatred of the suns back in the 90s to Barkley (as a rockets fan). He was a beast, and easily the best player the suns have ever had

Barkley has said himself that he is not 6'6. And Rodman was a good 6'9 so it's not all that surprising given how hard he played.
