I'll be in the hospital for a few days and would like to know your opinions on the .22mag derringer for the nights I'm not not home.My 1911 .45 she can't handle yet so suggestions are welcome. We have a 6yr old and 7yr old who'll be there with her.

why a derringer, just get a real gun.

22 mag is not A self defense caliber IMO

Be better off with a youth 20ga than a derringer.

AR15-22 with flashlight, laser, 25 round mag is my wifes WOC....
Got my wife one because I travel a lot...she absolutely loves it! I have plenty of other guns but she one even squeeze the trigger on them because she is a little gal and the recoil is just uncomfortable for her.
But that little 22.....she will all Rambo with that SOB when we take it out and shoot it.
Add in the fact that it has accessories that make her feel confident at night (flashlight and laser) and the fact that it is a 22 round that stands a lower chance of going through walls and hitting one of our 2 kids....
she loves it and it makes her feel comfortable.
but at the end of the day, that is what counts....what makes her feel comfortable. Because if she isnt comfortable with the WOC, she will never be able to use it properly in a pressure situation.

357 mag. Load with 38 specials she can shoot all day with it. Load with 357's for using on bad guys.
Or get a 9mm. Easy to shoot. Just get her comfortable with semi auto controls.
I wouldn't get a small pocket style revolver. They aren't easy to shoot at all.

If she is not an experienced shooter, you need to start working with her this weekend (see story about Jackson police officer shot and killed while partner unable to operate weapon).
My opinion - put her in one of the airweight revolvers by S&W or the LCR by Ruger in a .38.
The manuals for those wheelguns are pretty simple: Load, point, pull trigger, repeat until clicking noise is heard.

and for everyone that will say that a 22 round is not a home defense round.... I would agree if the choice is in my hand. But the fact is that my wife would probably never pull the trigger on my glock 45 because she shot it once and the recoil was way more than she could handle. Not to mention if she did shoot it, she would probably be equally as scared of the gun as the situation which woudl probably result in here not hitting anything with it.
That little 22 though....I feel (and more importantly "she" feels" like she could put 20 rounds in someone's arse real quick like.

Good god never a 22. Medium frame 38 or 357 revolver. A 410 derringer? Smh

My gf knows where the pistol is and would cower in the bed if someone broke in and I wasn't there

Derringers are across the table guns. There's no accuracy outside of ten feet.

I rather her grab a shotgun than my pistol if that's the case

May be a little too "tactical" but may this will work

What's the old saying? "Make sure you polish all the edges of that derringer real good. That way, when you miss your one shot, it won't hurt as much when the bad guy rams it up your arse"

If you are set on a .22, get a real .22 like a Ruger sr22 or a Walther p22. At least with those you can hold like a real gun and there is a 10 rd mag.
A full size 9mm has minimal recoil though and would be a better choice.

.22 mag derringer...nah. That's a belly gun. If a pistol is a must, the at least go to a full size .22 mag double action revolver, but not a derringer.
A Ruger 10/22 would be better than any .22 pistol.
Here are what each of my family members have by their bed for home defense:
Self: 9mm carbine
Wife: .357 revolver (4" barrel) loaded with .38 rounds
Daughter (age 14): Bersa .380
Son (age 11): Ruger 10/22
Son (age 3)...working up to Red Ryder
I start my kids on the Ruger 10/22 for home defense around age 8...depending on the individual kid's personality.

I agree, recoil that anyone could shoot. About equal to 38specials out of a full size 357. Not the airweights.

You've got a wise wife.
On my personal recommended list of self defense guns, I don't have a 22 mag nor 410 pistol or any sort. I also don't have any derringers.
LOTS of good gun rec's here.

Pay particular attention to the recs re: training for your wife and anyone else that may end up in need of using the home defense gun. Personally, if space is not a consideration, I'd suggest a youth model 20 gauge shotgun, Mossberg or Remington.
