The SEC and ESPN plan to formally announce the creation of an SEC channel on Tuesday. The two parties have begun to reach out to key constituents to let them know about the 12:00pm ET announcement at the Atlanta Hyatt. University presidents, ADs, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, ESPN execs and the conference's corporate sponsors are among those being invited to the news conference. The SEC and ESPN have been working on plans to form a channel since the fall of '11, and the new channel is expected to launch in August '14.

It's been almost silly the number of games that are never televised. One day our kids won't believe us when we tell them how it was.

"What do you mean you had to listen to the LSU baseball game on the radio??" and probably followed by "What's a radio?"

May as well call it the "Roll Tide" Network.

I laugh at those of you who think this will be a good thing.

Right now LSU fans are getting almost every football televised at the cost of the basic cable fees. CST is showing enuff baseball locally to meet my needs, at the same cost. Basketball as well. Watch what your fees to the SEC channel will turn into somewhere in the not too distant future. Just look at what ESPN charges it subscribers now in comparision to only a few yrs ago.

10 bucks says that they Longhorn Network us. They're gonna tell cable companies to bend over and charge them a ridiculous carry fee for the networks and 90 percent will say no. Most of us will not get to see their network. And then ESPN will tell us to "call your cable operator and tell them that you want the SEC Network."

That doesn't mean anything. That's where their ESPNU headquarter is now. They already have the infrastructure in place there.

Not 1 LSU baseball game has been on here in Florida. I already get B1G as part of the basic service, while Longhorn is part of the expanded sports tier. I would bet the SEC NEtwork will be part of the basic lineup.

I can get Longhorn network and all the Fox Sports channels as part of the sports tier for $5/month. We'll see how expensive this really turns out to be.

I strongly dislike cable, but they are in the right here. ESPN charges obscene amounts to cable providers. Enough so that it would make cable bills go up 2-3 dollars a month. For one network that only has a niche audience. And then if they do sit there and take it, every consumer will then bitch that "cable rates are out of control."

BTW, ESPN charges much more than comparable non-sports networks, and they get away with it because live sporting events draw huge audiences, get big advertisers, and are rarely DVR'd.
