This time, Windows blogger Paul Thurrott and supposed MS insider is also saying the next xbox requires online.

Gamespot Article

NeoGAF Thread

Some highlights from what he said:

quote:

Apparently Microsoft is launching a 99$ Xbox 360 codenamed "Stingray" this November alongside of the Next Xbox.

According to Paul this is because the next Xbox isn't going to offer backwards compatibility for 360 games.

He mentions that it's going to be expensive. Apparently around 500$ for a normal unit, or 300$ for a subscription model.

going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes. And that's all I have, but it does say that.

"Originally, they were going to announce this thing in April—April 24—now they're going to announce it May 21. We know there are events occuring this year where we're going to learn more about Durango.

[And it's a fourth quarter release, right?]

"Early November, yeah.

His Blog Post:

quote:

Always-on connectivity is indeed part of the next Xbox, and it was interesting to see this guy confirm that unofficially.

Microsoft is only upset about the way this feature was communicated, because it likes to present this kind of thing as a positive, not a negative.

To me, always connected seems like it would be more of a headache than it's worth. Joe Public isn't going to read the fine print and when their shiny new $500 Christmas gift doesn't work, they will take it back to Wal-Mart who could eventually get tired of it and stop selling them. At this point I almost hope that it is always on. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out as well as save me a few hundred dollars. My luck, they will somehow lock up all the badass 3rd party titles to be exclusives.

If you can afford a $500 xbox and not internet, then

I'm always hardwired to my router for any gaming system. I see zero problem with this. I have never used my PC offline.

Yoy have to be online to put steam in offline mode, or you won't be able to play any games.

It doesn't bother me either but it's a dumb business decision simply because it will be a hard sell at first. Plus it gives Sony a marketing edge.

For that alone I think it's all bullshite. Time will tell but it would be a losing battle for them and no way they do that when Sony is financially on the ropes. It would all but hand over the next gen to Sony.

Either way the numbers are showing how much PC gaming is gaining in popularity again. I wonder if either console can slow that trend down or if it's already too late.

link?

I'd be worried if PC wasn't getting some sort of foothold when it outclasses consoles at the end of a life cycle like this.

I would have to find it but it was an article I read a while back.

Also read this today and it points to it as well

quote:

Many of the old-school PC gamers I know that moved to playing games on Xbox over the last 10 years are coming back to PC because of free-to-play and indie games, controller and TV support, as well as incredible digital distribution on platforms like Steam.

That paragraph describes me perfectly.

The 360 was fine. I got my moneys worth. Its a good product. it served me well. But I've moved on

I see no reason for me to buy a next Gen console over a new graphics card for my PC.

The ps4 intrigues me but until I see some hard #s, its just intrigue. I'm definitely not getting this Microsoft console

These are pretty much all the reasons I'm switching to PC. It's more expensive initially but there are so many free and cheap games and huge sales and the digital distribution is much easier. Hopefully there will be a trend and more major titles will be developed with PC in mind rather than being an afterthought.

This is where I am at too. My only reason to maybe buy one will be to play with my nephew but he is wanting a gaming PC so that might not even happen.

I may get one later on in their life cycle when they get cheaper.

I'll probably do this as well since I have a lot of Live friends and for the console exclusives. Although I might cry if Dragon's Dogma 2 is console-only like the first.

that's great for you. i use my xbox offline most of the time. if i can't do this, i don't have any reason to buy it. its not a matter of affording internet, its a matter of needing microsoft's permission to use the things that i bought.
