When a cop stops you, do you stay in your car or go to cop's car?

Got stopped today for what I knew would be improper lane usage. I stayed in my car, papers in hand. He never came over and I noticed him motioning to me to go to his car -- he was outside of it.

Ended up with a warning.

Hadn't ever been stopped before ... what's protocol regarding get out of/staying in your vehicle???

normally I think they want you to stay inside of your vehicle for everyone's safety.

In FL and TX, they want you to stay in the car, and consider it the beginning of a possible hostile reaction if you get out unless told to do so.

Well, I did ... again papers in hand. Finally saw him motioning to me ... gave him papers and got off with a warning. Figured that would happen when he didn't come to me but what the hell do I know.

And no he wasn't an arse at all.

I pull over, roll down my windows and get my license and registration ready.

Depends. If I am clean I stay in the car. if I am riding dirty I get out and lock my doors.

He only did that because the OP was reaching around in his car after he got pulled over.

Why did you pull over? Hit the accelerator and get out of there. Make him chase you and set him up to get in an accident.

I just wanted to have my stuff together ... knew he'd be asking for it. Should he really be worried about a 43 yo mother in a ponytail ruffling through the car for needed info?? lol

Yes. Cop killers look like anyone else. All he knows is that he pulled you over and you were rummaging through the car where he couldn't see.

The best thing to do when pulled over is 1) Pull waaay over. Onto the grass if you can. 2) Roll down the window and turn on interior lights if it is dark. 3) Then put your hands at 10 and 2 on the wheel and do absolutely nothing. Don't reach for anything (including papers) unless told to do so.

I read this, and almost called you a dumbass

Then I read this. That's pretty odd...

I'm not a dumbass and yes it was pretty odd I thought. Kinda thought well maybe he'll be nice and do the warning thing which he did. Glad to say he wasn't an arse at all! Neither was I.

re: When a cop stops you, do you stay in your car or go to cop's car?
A cop stopped me once in a quasi speed trap set up, and as he was coming up to the car he saw a sticker on the car that made us have something in common. I don't know what the policy is/was, this was Palm Beach County SO, but it seemed like he was obliged to give me some kind of ticket. After BS'ing a bit, and talking to another deputy, he said he was going to write me up for failure to produce proof of insurance. I started to give him my ins. card, and he goes "no dumbass, I don't want to see that, this will only cost $9, and it's non-moving."
