Honestly, could UCLA have done any better than Steve Alford?

I'm not over-joyed with this hire, but realistically he might be the best they could do.

Shaka Smart said no. Brad Stevens said no. Some locals out here were actually hoping for Rick Pitino or Billy Donovan, but the odds of that happening were zero. Both would be taking huge pay-cuts to come to an inferior program.

Is there anyone out there who would have taken the job who would have been a better hire for UCLA?

If that's an issue then maybe UCLA needs to consider upping the compensation.

If they want an established and successful coach, they are going to have to minimize that coach's financial risk.

The guys on 890 were shitting all over the hire.

Steve Alford has more NIT appearances than NCAA app's
Steve Alford has made the Sweet 16 2 times, Ben Howland had 3 Final 4's
Steve Alford did the worst coaching job of this year's tournament
Steve Alford had one of the most hyped teams coming into the tournament and lost to a Harvard team with no scholarships
Harvard got blasted by Arizona in the next round, UCLA beat Arizona 3 times this year

They kept going on and on

UCLA never offered the job to Shaka Smart....fyi. Which really makes this hire look dumb. Shaka wasn't even in the top 5. UCLA also had boosters in line to offer over 3 mill a year, but the UC board of regents wasn't going to approve it. IE say hello to Steve. No UCLA isn't broke but Cali is and the lawmakers and teachers unions wouldn't stand for such a high paid public employee at a time like this. Frick Dan.

Also, Ben Howland was not an option to keep this year unless he made a FF or Champ. His name is pretty trashed in west coast recruiting circuits and ran too many players off. We were down to 6 Scholi players in the later portion of the season.
