You think right now UCLA is a better program than Florida?

I think Billy is the reason why Florida is a better program.

Yes. It's a blue blood program in a great location.

Gator, come on...Florida program is much better shape then UCLA. I promise you, when Billy calls it quits, coaches will line up for the job...not begging for coaches like UCLA.

He's a total anomaly in the SEC - once he goes, Florida can easily sink back to not being relevant...and it only takes a year...unless your heritage is basketball in the SEC, good luck having good basketball teams beyond one superstar coach.

True, but I think a lot of good/great coaches will want the Florida job when Billy is gone.

UCLA made best hire of who was out there and willing to come.

Coach is a great man good to great recruiter sketchy on X and O

I'm surprised he went there as he has to be biggest fish in pond. I'm happy for him and will get some UCLA gear now.

UCLA never offered the job to Shaka Smart....fyi. Which really makes this hire look dumb. Shaka wasn't even in the top 5. UCLA also had boosters in line to offer over 3 mill a year, but the UC board of regents wasn't going to approve it.

my cousin is a ucla alum and current high school basketball coach in the LA area(lots of local recruiting ties) and told me this exact same thing. Brad Stevens did turn down UCLA, and the program was willing to throw a shite ton of money at either pitino or donovan.

Thye should have just brought in Steve Fisher for a few years, but they would never do that because he is old.

Regardless of his age, he can recruit the West Coast, and has really made SDSU a very good program out there and has proven to be a good coach in the NCAAT.

Did they?

I don't know about either of those guys though...zero connection to Los Angeles talent basin and despite their years coaching...both total East Coast guys who have never connected with California kids and the locals.

Alford has had tremendous success actually at all his stops - rebuilding defunct programs. He has won big, season championships.

...but we are a zero sum society I guess. So three weeks in March is all that defines a coach I suppose. Get hot, get lucky in March or get out.

And yeah, if he doesn't go to Final Fours he'll be out at UCLA too.

Yes he has plenty of regular season success but you can't see how he struggles in the tournament? And yes, those 3 weeks in march do typically define a coach. The tournament is what matters.

He was, but his tenure at Iowa tarnished that a bit. He's regained some of that at New Mexico, but I don't think he's quite gotten back to the lofty perceptions he had upon taking the Iowa job.

Met someone who coached with Alford at Iowa. Said at New Mexico you are getting 2nd and third tier guys from Cali . Iowa you are getting 2nd n 3rd tier guys from Midwest . Obviously Cali talent way better then Midwest
