They rarely rarely put out a bad song. I'm going through a serious Spoon phase right now.

I love everything they've done. A Series of Sneaks is in my top 10 evah.

Bingo... Girls Can Tell is a close second...

Kinda got bored with their last couple of records, but its not like they're bad..

Really got into Kill the Moonlight. I like that one a lot. Gimme Fiction is pretty good too. Those are about the only two I listen to regularly.

such a badass record. havent really been into anything post Kill the Moonlight. Britt lost his bite, but still writes good songs. some of their best stuff is on the Love Ways ep.

the Home vol IV split with Connor Oberst is really great too. "let the distance bring us together" made all my sappy mix cds.

I'm pretty sure that I can elaborate for him. If you listen to Telephono, A Series of Sneaks, Soft Effects EP, and most of Girls Can Tell, you hear angular, guitar rock. Kill The Moonlight forward is more electronic, and less "angry" for lack of a better word.

Exactly, although I have all the records... Kill The Moonlight was the last one I really listened to a lot of...

And both EPs mentioned in this thread are essential Spoon... They were probably my favorite band in the early 00s

pretty much whats been said. I really loved Gimme Fiction, but even then, i kindof felt i had heard Spoon do these kinds of songs before, even though it was a pretty flawless record imo. ive liked the last two, but in passing. Telephono to Gimmie Fiction showed a pretty linear progression, and i cant say that i feel the last two offered me anything fresh. i still think theyre good albums though. shite, 9 releases and no stinkers yet, but i dont think he can top Series of Sneaks and Girls Can Tell. I had never heard a record like Girls Can Tell, and thats something a guy can only make once.

I dunno, y'all, i'm really really feeling this Gimme Fiction. I think I'll have to go with it as my fav of their albums....at least, until I change my mind.

Oh, no question.

Series of sneaks is a hard rocking album.
Transference is borderline electropop.

I can't say I have a preference for the harder rocking stuff or the more electronic stuff. It all sounds good to me.

I'm repeating myself, but I totally see what you're saying as far as the linear progression. I just can't say that the stylistic evolution has had either a positive or negative effect on the quality of tracks they're putting out. I'm quite blown away by the consistency. Every album is equally solid, though I'll have to go with Gimme Fiction as being the greatest among equals. IMHO.

In the song "Was It You", the layered beats are just like...wow.

It's like a slow, steady bassline over top of like a dozen fast-moving percussion lines*. Is that a damn cowbell?

If I listened to this song while under the influence of marijuana, I'm pretty sure I would be certain it was the greatest track ever. Like ever, as in the history of civilization.

Perhaps this weekend I will partake in some "Was it You" -- or, actually, the entire Gimme Fiction album -- in combination with some puffy puffy.

Spoon's pretty damned good. If you like them, you also need to give the Divine Fits a listen. It's a combined Spoon/Wolf Parade effort that's been near the top of my queue all year.

The Divine Fits album is excellent. My favorite track is "like ice cream".
