re: Spoon might just be my favorite band

Spoon is definitely one of my top five favorite bands.

I just kind of stumbled across them in the year 2000 and have been following them ever since.

Favorite songs:

Beast and the Dragon Adored
Fitted Shirt
My Mathematical Mind
Someone Something
Jonathon Fisk
Utilitarian
...

could probably list out about 25 more easily

I first found them on that What's Up Matador comp with the song "Telemon Bridge". They hooked me immediately.

After listening to Soft Effects this morning (been a few years), it can stand pound for pound with A Series of Sneaks as their best release...

Same page. Matter of fact, I just ordered a copy of Soft Effects off of amazon. My original was lost in a move.

I haven't heard "Soft Effects". Here is how I rate their full-length albums:

1. Gimme Fiction
2. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
3. Girls Can Tell
4. Kill The Moonlight
5. Transference
6. A Series of Sneaks

I don't want the above to be misleading. "A Series of Sneaks" and "Transference" are probably 4.5 star albums in my book. I really love this band. Going back and listening to all their albums chronologically was an excellent decision on my part.* There are very songs they've made that I dislike. I rated "Series of Sneaks" below the others because I didn't find any single tracks on Series of Sneaks that I felt I needed to put on repeat. And at the end of the day, that's how I rate albums.

Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was a really close call. I went with Gimme Fiction because it has that slow-moving ambient sound that I really dig. Songs like "Was It You" that don't really have choruses and just sort of creep along are my kind of songs.

Girls can tell got the nod over Kill The Moonlight on the strength of "Anything You Want", which is probably my favorite Spoon song.

Transference got the nod over Series of Sneaks because I didn't think there was anything on Series of Sneaks as good as "Who Makes Your Money".

re: Spoon might just be my favorite band
I first found out about them on Napster. There used to be an artist highlight on the home page. One day, it was Spoon and gave a brief bio on them being from Austin, etc. I've always been a fan of bands from Austin, so I downloaded Girls Can Tell and have been hooked ever since.

How do you rate it in relation to the Spoon albums?

I like it, but I don't think it's quite as good as any of the Spoon albums.

You didnt rate Telephono?

1)A Series of Sneaks
2)Girls Can Tell
3)Telephono
4)Kill The Moonlight

I'd probably but the last 3 in any order 5-7, they just kinda lost the edge I liked after KTM... Again, not bad, just not as good as they once were..

I didn't. I burned the other six albums (in mp3 form) onto a single disc and have had all 71 (I think) songs looping in my car. I guess I just sort of forgot about Telephono, but my Spoon immersion isn't fully complete until I listen to it, so I need to get on that.

Interesting, I think Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga are just mindblowingly good. Transference is a tough of a drop-off, but it was going to be very hard for them to top the previous two albums, imo.

To be fair, we are listening to them from different perspectives... Ive been a fan from Telephono and listened to them chronologically and after KTM they kinda lost me with all the keyboards... I liked the angular/spastic guitar rock... I still can hear the Spoon I like in the new records I just dont feel them as much...

edit: I'm sure there is a degree of the law of dimishing returns...

It's interesting how differently people view bands based on whether their first stuff was the first stuff they listened to.

Another example is Afghan Whigs. Most old-school Afghan Whigs fans will argue between Gentlemen and Black Love as their best album. I had never heard any of their albums, and so I listened to them all chronologically and thought 1965 was the best and by a comfortable margin.

If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's that point of entry is a HUGE factor in a person's perception of a band's work. This thread is a perfect example of that.
